Green Lantern (2011)

Sigh. Had high hopes for this movie, but the lack of major reviews is definitely starting to concern me...

Reviews aren't going to make much difference to this movie one way or another, but if Warners is anxious that a lot of tepid-to-bad ones are in the offing it makes sense for them to enforce the embargo.

Well, good reviews usually means a good movie, so for me personally it kinda sucks if it sucks.

They make no difference to me.

I've already seen far more than enough about this movie to know that I'm going to enjoy it. It's pretty close to exactly what I want in a Green Lantern movie.

Beyond that, it'd be nice if this one makes enough money to warrant a sequel. To the extent that reviews matter in regard to the box office, I'd like to see good reviews. Looking back over quite a few of the big summer hits of recent years, though, there's not a lot of evidence that reviews affect the behavior of the kids who put these things over the top.

Yeah, I was really hoping this would get good reviews. But as long as the reviews for it aren't absolutely horrible here, I'm still going to see it. I don't know about anybody else, but I put alot more stock in what you guys on here think of these kinds of movies than I do the critics.

Looks like the first review has been posted online.

The film’s very talented director, Martin Campbell (‘Casino Royale’), handles these otherworld scenes, as well as the finale’s tentacle-tastic Parallax fight, with expected aplomb. But whenever this Lantern returns to terra firma (too often), its imaginative flights are ground beneath the DC overlords’ demographic-pandering heels.

He gave the movie a 2/5.

If that's what the criticial consensus is going to look like, might pass. My reservations on the film really have to do with how comparatively underwhelming the Earthbound action is completed to the interstellar fare, and as I'm not a fan of the franchise or particularly invested in the film I have no like, built-in interest in the movie.

Green Lantern was always my favorite superhero when I was a kid. I'm definitely looking forward to this.

And I'm not holding my breath for a Sinestro Corps War sequel, although I would love one. A sequel with all seven (eight? Nine?) Corps-es would be even better!

I'm counting 9 Corps on the DC Comics Database.
Green Lantern Corps
Red Lantern Corp
Agent Orange
Sinestro Corps (Yellow)
Blue Lantern Corps
Indigo Tribe
Star Sapphires (Purple)
Black Lantern Corps
White Lantern Corps

The "Orange Lanterns" are just a bunch of construct created by the one, Orange Lantern.

And there is only one White Lantern.

I don't place much stock in what anyone says - I just go with what I see.

Second review now online.

I could easily fill pages running down the plot obstacles that Lantern director Martin Campbell soullessly cycles through; identifying all the characters introduced by the film's four screenwriters, only to be easily disposed of; and "explaining" the complete hodgepodge of psychological cause-and-effects, from the pervasive daddy issues and complete absence of mothers, to the arbitrary, less-than-convincing confidence issues that Hal is able to surmount as soon as it becomes clear that Carol really wants to kiss him. But the movie never bothers to suggest that any of that really matters: Campbell's ADD style privileges spectacle over story--so much so that the film never rewards the viewer for even trying to keep track of what is going on.

Hmm, not really sure what to make of that one. I can't say I've ever found Campbell's style to be very ADD.

That link's not working right now although the headline at LAWeekly still points to it. The review was originally picked up from the Village Voice, though, and is online there.

Enforcement of these embargoes is generally selective - you've got to figure that the AICN guys who customarily suck up to studio summer movies are unimpressed by GL or at least one or two would be online over there.

The review embargo is suppose to last until Thursday, there will be a ton of reviews released that day.

Just was wondering if anyone wanted to start the film discussion and review thread? I was just going to wait until Friday to do it but those of you who are regular contributors to this thread would like to...feel free.
