I'm picking movies from 2000 to 2009. There is no order

Jan. 2000-Jan 2001= 1year
2001-2002= year 2,
2002-2003= year 3,
2003-2004=year 4,
2004-2005= year5,
2005-2006=year 6,
2006-2007=year 7,
2007-2008=year 8,
2008-2009=year 9,
2009-2010=year 10.

Add them all up= 1 decade.

Unless by "2009-2010" you mean the decade ends when 2010 starts (Midnight on December 31st, 2009), no, that isn't how it works. Otherwise, that's eleven years. The decade is properly 2000-2009.

We don't think of 1940 is part of the 1930s, or 1970 part of the 1960s. They're the start of new decades.

But there's no year 0. 1 AD was the first year of the common era, so 10 AD would be the end of its first decade, and 11 AD would have been the beginning of its second. 2010 is the last year of the decade that began with 2001, and 2011 is the start of the next decade.

The confusion comes from people breaking decades down into "the '80s" or "the '50s" and what have you, without taking into account that there was no year 0.

I just picked from the years 2000-2009, which is 10 years, aka one decade - which only seems sensible since 2010 isn't over yet anyway, so there are films from this year that I hacen't seen and so don't know whether to add to the list...

Well, why stop now?

The year zero argument was working for me right until I included MEMENTO. So close. Anyway, the more conventional idea of decades spanning from 00-09 is just easier, so let's just forget I included a couple of movies from this year and move on.
