I hear that the Bucky story is awesome, tho' I'm not a big Marvel reader these days...but big groan when I saw Thanos was coming back.
Marvel needs that cosmic psycho Thanos. Marvel is a very different Universe to DC. Joss Whedon himself commented that's what makes the difference in writing. The DC heroes are way up in the clouds and their opponents are often minor crooks from the street.
Marvel its heroes are often way too down to Earth with ridiculous overwhelming problems.
Yeah Sometimes DC heroes break a sweat, sometimes they face big super aliens and monsters but even then your DC characters often clean up with ease. If Superman faces some alien that moves too fast he just pushes himself to fly faster, if some big giant creature of myth is about to over power and step on her then Wonder Woman just screams 'Hera, give me strength!' lifts harder and then kicks the big monsters butt.
Very few of DC's elite ever really face down to Earth issue like the Xmen do, very few of DC's elite are ever really out classed by their enemies. Maybe the Batman, Green Lantern John Stewart, Green Arrow, Wild Cat and Black Canary have to work extremely hard to earn their hero status but most of DC's other characters are way up in the clouds with the Gods they are overpowered compared to their under powered opponents.
Right now the balance is off in Marvel, usually its hero characters are totally out classed by the bad guys and face overwhelming odds and just by sheer luck manage to keep the bad guys at bay and live to fight another day.
What I mean by Marvel being outclassed is Xavier and Cyclops facing Magneto, Apoclaypse, Phoenix and a bunch of other over powered mutant tenagers with temper tantrums but miracluously hold the bad guys off and live to fight another day. What I mean by outclassed is Peter Parker broke, over loaded with work, trouble with exams, got fired, can't pay the rent and his alter ego Spider-Man is facing down Venom, Electro, Sandman, Goblin and a bunch of other Sinister Six....and somehow miraculously Spider-Man lives to make it through another week.
Its not like Superman where he faces some old version of Darkseid, suffering from arthritis and blows him away with Super Breath.
Spider-Man gets owned every 2nd or 3rd comic, if he's not getting buggered by landlords and Bosses like JJ, he's getting his face bashed up by guys like Goblin. He's not just a hero with powers, Spidey is a real down to Earth NewYorker with real human flaws
Marvel has too many super powered heroes no longer facing overwhelming odds. Thor is back from the dead, he was beating up everyone, almost all his old powerful enemies got themselves dead or are MIA. All Spider-Man's enemies either reformed, died or retired. Venom became a hero for hire, Goblin became a nice hero in an Ironman suit, Carnage got tore apart by the Sentry (Marvel's version of Superman on steroids). Like Superman the Sentry can beat anyone, the deck once again is stacked in favor of Marvel's heroes unless the writers push him down to road where in fits into that box called 'I'm no longer a hero but a psycho nuisance'. The Abomination got himself dead, Jack O'Lantern shot, the Xmen enemies Sinister dead, Sabretooth dead, Omega red dead and their cosmic enimies the Shiar Emperors....most of them blew up or are in a big cosmic prison. Then Silver Surfer came back and has been blasting away all the bad guys from Earth to Wolf359/Romulus without ever breaking a sweat
Thanos is needed just because that's the way Marvel away worked, good guys always out classed and out numbered by the bad guys.
Plus there's something creepy and engrossing about that whole Thanos story. A fascinating cosmic bad guy who wants to dominate the Galaxy and has a desire to bone Death.
Barry Allen should have been left alone; I believe it's ruined one of the greatest and most poignant deaths in comics history.
Yeah I agree, I missed the whole orginal deaths of Barry and Phoenix I was just a little kid in the 80s but you can buy reprints and educate yourself on the classic Wolfman, Perez, Kirby and Stan Lee stories.
Reading the old ones I feel they would have ended better keeping the Flash and Jean Grey dead, but then again there's something weird about comic characters they are kinda immortal like the old Greek stories so when some one gets killed off the Gods grant them favors so they don't stay dead for too long
