Great meals from stuff you had lying around . . .

backstept

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
last night I couldn't figure out what to make, so I decided to use up some things I had that might possibly make something edible
deli sliced roast beef
red orange and yellow peppers
tortillas

I sliced up the peppers and cooked 'em in a skillet and when they got limp I turned the heat way down and tore up the roast beast sandwich meat and threw it in there . . . only needed to warm it up since it was cooked at the factory
then I mixed up several sauces I had in the fridge: sweet'n'sour, spicy barbecue, ranch and some hot sauce. in total it was just enough to cover the pepper and beef
wrapped it up in tortillas with a slice of cheese

sweet cuppin' cakes! I ought to experiment more often!
it was indeed delicious

so folks, got any good stories of kitchen improv?

I was trying to impress a chick I had bullshitted into coming home with me, but thanks to a roommate I was down on supplies

For the main dish I ended up dicing up fish-sticks in pink ramen-noodles and putting crab-cakes on the side.

For a side-dish I chopped up an entire can of Slim Jims and dumped them into a tub of Red Bliss Potato Salad and sprinkling cheddar cheese on top.

...I ended up marrying her so YAAAY I guess. Either my 1337-kitchen/skillz impressed her or she felt sorry for me and didn't want me to starve to death. :D

nice :techman:
I like making ramen noodles and instead of using the seasoning packet I drain the water and add ketchup and yellow cheese like substance (american cheese singles). . . makes for a delicious, but sorry excuse for spaghetti :D

btw whoever invented 'American' processed cheese product should be ashamed . . . sure it's edible and goes great in grilled cheese sammiches, but real cheese is always better

A quick and easy one that she requests from time to time:

Take a dozen sausage patties, put them in a frying pan with a splash of water. Cook, remove the patties and add more water. Now make instant mac-and-cheese in that liquid, drain and reserve some of it, now add butter and fry onions and peppers in it...

Dice the patties, peppers, onions, and mix into the mac-and-cheese... scoop it onto a flatbread garnish with a glob of sour cream and some cheddar cheese and roll it up.

oh now that sounds fantastic!
must bookmark this thread for future reference :D

here's a snack I enjoyed when I was a kid:
core an apple (we had a core-er thing . . . was like a tube with a wood plunger and the tube was sharpened on one end, just plunge the tube through the apple and knock the core out of the tube with the plunger . . . anyway)
now fill the hole with peanut butter, and for additional deliciousness eat with a handful of chocolate chips
pop a few chips, take a bite of apple :D

One more: Fish tacos

Prepare some hard taco shells.

Take six cooked crab-cakes, destroy them with vigor. Toss into a bowl, add a diced tomato, some black olives (finely chopped), half a packet of seasoning from pink Ramen noodles and a quarter-cup of mashed 'taters

Now make some instant rice, but make it VERY STICKY. Mix in some taco-sauce.

Spoon the sticky rice mixture into the bottom of the shell, put the other stuff on top, garnish as you see fit.

This thread reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Marge becomes addicted to gambling. There's nothing to eat in the house so Homer makes dinner out of a pie crust, cloves, and a Tom Collins mix.

He takes a bite and his face freezes. In defeat, he mutters, "Let's go get your mother." :)

I made a "sort of" beef stroganoff a couple of nights ago out of leftover steak, an onion, beef broth, butter and sour cream. Served over egg noodles of course.

one of my favorites is
chicken breasts, a can of salsa, a can of diced tomatos (the really chunky kind) and some corn
cut up the chicken and dump it all in a crock pot for a couple hours . . . can also be done with porkchops
the meat just falls apart :D

I tagged the thread. :D

Fish-stick and home-fry omelets:

Make your egg base, chop up some cooked fish-sticks, toss in some home-fries, some pepper and and if you like cheese on fish, add your cheese.

Grew up near the ocean we ate fish three meals a day sometimes. :)

I hope I don't ruin the manly mood by joining in! The chicken and salsa idea sounds delicious! I'm definitely trying that.

Yesterday I threw a bunch of veggies (broccoli, baby corn, carrots, red pepper, celery, and spinach) into a wok with chicken, and I added a glob of peanut butter and soy sauce. It turned out great. I also had little spring rolls, but no sweet and sour or plum sauce to dip them in, so I used orange marmalade instead, and it was delicious.

Once I was craving pastry but hadn't the energy to make anything, so I took a half a Pillsbury pie crust, spread it with blueberry jam, and baked it for 5 minutes for an instant torte.

:guffaw: One of his finest moments.

For me, when there's nought but scraps left in the house, I tend to make something out of some rice, a can of tuna, a tomato and red pepper, and a dusting of parmesan cheese. It works. :bolian:

Tonight, I'm probably going to brown up a pound of ground beef, sauté some mushrooms and jalapeños, throw that into a pot of beef gravy and toss it all on top of some white rice.

Cheap, easy, works for a simple meal.

meatloaf burgers

ground meat of your choice: Beef or turkey
oatmeal
eggs
ketchup

combine in a big bowl and mix it up with your hands. don't add too much oatmeal or it will be too dry and crumbly, beat the eggs before adding, you want it to be sticky but not soggy
shape into patties and fry in a pan, or on a foreman grill, or on a real grill like a regular burger
if you're feeling fancy you can add chopped onions to the mix
this is the exact same recipe as regular meatloaf, only cooked in patties on a grill instead of baked in a pan

also it can't get much easier than pasta
boil it up
drain it
throw a can of sauce at it :D

hmm . . . let's see
also it can't get much easier than pasta
1 boil it up
2 drain it
3 throw a can of sauce at it :D

I usually skip step 4. Sometimes I sprinkle some salt over the whole thing though.

YOU DON'T EAT IT? . . . hehe just joshin'

hmm . . . a little butter to keep it from sticking and a bit of salt sounds deliciously easy
great idea :D

one of the things I want to learn how to make is Dukboki
some friends of mine made Korean food a couple weeks ago and it was the best!
