Great Data moment in "Relics"

Agreed with comments above...Scotty was a long-winded PITA at first. Frankly, I was as annoyed with him as Geordi was, but then things worked out. I'm glad he wasn't treated like a demigod. Good episode!

I don't care how busy he is!

I'm sure Picard would have said "Geordi, you don't have than analysis finished because you were hanging out with Scotty? Well, no problem, take your time. I'll go to my ready room and play a game on my console." :p

I LOVE this episode. And i do get annoyed with Geordi EVERY FRIGGING TIME i watch the ep. I just hate the way he treats Scotty. I don't care how busy he is! I actually think Geordi doesn't show a whole lot of patience with anyone most of the time (throughout the entire series.) As much as i love Levar, Geordi is my least favorite character of all the entire series characters because of this.

Interesting observations! I have to admit it has been a while since I have watched very much of TNG, but I always felt that Geordi would be the character that I would most likely to be friends with if I were a colleague in that Universe. I am going to have to watch a few more episodes more carefully to see if I pick up as much on that impatience as is your impression.

If I recall correctly, Geordi seems genuinely warm and patient towards his friends (Data, Worf, Tasha, etc.,), but I agree he does seem pretty no-nonsense and intense when interacting with his subordinates down in Engineering. I do think that it is worth noting that he also seems to be very impatient and frustrated with HIMSELF when he is at an impasse in his own work. For better or worse, this may be how he handles his stress, both at work and in personal relationships.

I think Scotty and Geordi are two of my favorite characters (at least the ones I think I would most like to have a drink with....)

So, you're sitting at your job, you're in charge, and in walks a guy who's decades out of the loop and he begins playing around with things and you've got a task to finish within the hour you're not going to be a bit annoyed?

To us, the viewers, Scotty is an iconic character. To LaForge Scotty is just another person, a fellow officer.

Scotty opens up the dilithium chamber, starts messing with the computers, tells stories, talks loudly, all while LaForge is trying to finsih up his survey. And as a last insult, Scotty insults how LaForge is doing his job, "Laddie you have a lot to learn if you want to be a miracle worker!"

When Scotty and LaForge first meet and beam aboard the ship LaForge is mostly friendly towards him, pointing out some of the changes, talking about the Dyson Sphere, Scotty's rigging of the transporter, etc. But in the Engineering scene, Scotty is the one out of line.

^^^Yeah, what Trekker said. He actually was able to articulate my feelings better than I could.

Anybody remember Picard's line about "I look forward to hearing your perspective on the exciting events of your day" verbatim? I'd really like to use that sometime.

Yeah... consider what it would have been like if one of the 20th-century refugees from "The Neutral Zone" went to engineering and started lecturing Geordi. Exact same situation, but I bet the reactions around here would be totally different.

Claire: Oh! I like totally used to do IT stuff before my first child! I bet I could really help you guys out with your computer programs but are you on the Apple or Windows platform? You guys should really think about first updating your frimware and getting all of your latest patch updates before doing anything too drastic! How often do you update your drivers?

Where do you put in the floppy disk?

I think the subsequent Jenolan scenes were also key: Geordi inspecting the systems on that old ship and going "well, come to think of it, these are basically the same systems we have now", and Scotty showing that his "outdated" knowledge was still wholly relevant.

Loved that development.

"Can I check my Facebook page? I bet I have like a million fan invites!"

Missed the whole "we use isolinear chips now", "we re-crystalize while they're still in the frame" and the "we're meant to operate that system over x%" thing?

Phaser and transporter technology may be "mostly the same" but the the things Scotty was playing with in Engineering certainly weren't. It was a nice scene because it showed that Scotty did have things to offer but certainly not enough to barge into Engineering and start fooling around with things.

Nope, didn't miss that. The details changed, but the fundamentals didn't. I also agree that Scotty came across as out of his league initially, but that he proved himself later.

Wasn't that the whole point?

... so, Yeoman Randi, if Geordi got irritated with the above, would you think he was out of line? No matter how busy he is?

From the point of view of the story, there's not much sense in bringing Scotty back if you're just going to throw him a parade. There had to be some kind of character conflict there, and I think that choosing to make it between the E-D crew and Scotty was a gutsy decision that works pretty well.

Well and the whole point of the story was "just because something is old, doesn't mean you throw it out." The crew is, infact, surprised to learn -and Scotty ashamed to admit- he's on his way to the Retirement Planet to play Bridge all day and wear his sneakers in the community pool.

But to get there Scotty had to learn this and to learn this, yeah, the crew had to make him feel out-of-place. Which, honestly, he was. Not due to his age but due to lack of new technology. One of the Wright Brothers would be dumbfounded on how a jumbo jet-engine or a supersonic plane works. But with some quick "brushing up" they'd likely be very, very useful.

Scotty may not have known about the new crystals systems, or operating percentages, etc. But he still proved useful in the end.
