Great acting moments in TNG

Great acting moments in TNG:
  • In Hero Worship, the shot just before Data returns to build the model. Just as he is about to exit, but changes his mind and returns.
  • The Most Toys,"I am only an android" .
  • Picard's conversation with Data in Measure of a Man, in the scene that starts with Data coming to quarters and ends with Picard saying "Dismissed", esp. the last part.
  • Picard's transformations in Inner Light.
  • "If you were any other man".

Oh my, what a selection of perfectly nuanced dramatic performances, made even better on the Blu-Ray! One can appreciate every gesture, every raise of the eyebrow, every subtle nod. I agree with you wholeheartedly, as does anyone who appreciates true drama and sci-fi!

Of the top of my head.

* The interactions between David Warner and Patrick Stewart in "Chain of Command".
* Pretty much any scene involving Picard and Tomalak.
* Admiral Jarok and Picard's scene in his ready room.
* Picard and Lilly in the conference room during ST: FC
* Riker in "Frame of Mind"
* Wesley and Picard in the cavern during "Final Mission"
* Picard in "Inner Light"

There are plenty more, but those are the first ones that come to mind.

I'd also include the scene where Picard uses logic to call out Sarek to admit his Bendaii Syndrome, & the subsequent scene where he is struggling with Sarek's emotions

Got to admit that the scene where Picard imitates Locutus as a means to feel out Hugh is pretty impressive too

Stewart is really top notch throughout both those episodes

Patrick Stewart and Mark Lenard, Sarek.
Ronny Cox, Chain of Command.
LeVar Burton, The Mind's Eye.
Charles Cooper, Sins of the Father.
Saul Rubinek, The Most Toys.

Some of the performances I've enjoyed over the years.

Now nnnnnn will come and tell me how "unsophisticated" I am for enjoying them...

One of Stewart's best was given without saying a word. It came at the end of Preemptive Strike while Riker was reporting on Ro. The emotion that Stewart was able to convey through just his expression was amazing.

Now to wait and see if I got it right.

Colm Meany and Bob Gunton in "The Wounded." Particularly in that final scene where they sing "The Minstrel Boy" together . . . .

WOW! I'm so glad somebody brought that up. I just love how Picard just sat there... motionless. He didn't even blink!

Maybe Q already had him time-shifting given that this episode is RIGHT before the finale... just a thought.

I really like how Troi was mad when Riker told her he canceled her exam and couldn't take it anymore in "Thine Own Self". High-quality acting right there! I love it!

Best acting performance for me in TNG is any scene of Patrick Stewart's in Family. There were so many wonderful moments by him in that. Two that immediately come to mind is the vineyard scene with his brother and the goodbye between them towards the end.

Stewart is a master of understatement in that way. There are glimpses of that very thing all over the place, but none quite as pronounced as that one

His reaction to Worf laying down his badge on the conference table comes to mind, or how he just turns his back on Gul Macet at the end of 'The Wounded'

Which reminds me

Yes

Whether you love or hate Nemesis, the scene where Shinzon reveals himself on the stairs and Picard gets a look at him for the first time. Another example of Stewart saying nothing but getting across something very meaningful.

A great actor can have a great castmate, too. While clearly the vast majority of the work there is from Stewart, I'd like to give some props to Frakes -- Riker is definitely not at fault and no one's angry at the guy, and he tried to give Ro some credit too, but he makes it pretty clear that he does not want to be in the same room as a fuming Picard.

Likewise, you get the sense from Stewart that if Riker stayed in the room just one iota longer, Riker would become Picard's unpleasant sounding board, with yells of anger strong enough to trigger the shields :) If I were Riker, I'd want to get out of there ASAP to prevent that from happening, too.

I never really got that impression from Picard. More likely it would be the kind of response he gave Worf, after Worf refused to aid the dying Romulan in The Enemy. He probably would have just dismissed him, which is probably why Riker just left. It was clearly time to dismiss himself, & he knew the captain well enough to have figured that out ahead of time, without being told so

I look at it this way: if you're *really, REALLY* angry and seething about something (and Ro's actions definitely qualify), you're pretty likely going to yell at the person closest to you in order to vent, regardless of whether that person has anything to do with it or not. Leaders are only human, after all. Everyone was pretty intimidated by Picard in the first season, so it's best not to chance being that one person.

Yeah, Riker knew it was time to dismiss himself (and like I said, he's not only innocent, he also tried to be a good guy about it), but what if he stayed just a bit longer? Boom goes the dynamite :)

I always felt that could have been a wax figure of Picard instyead of Patrick Stewart and it would have been the same...
