Regarding "lasers that produce gravity", I recommend reading Jerry Oltion's contribution to the New Earth novel series, The Flaming Arrow. Regardless of whether the physics of the book's main gimmick are correct or not, the sheer scale of the thing boggles the mind, in a good way. (Also, the McCoy/Scotty interaction is pretty good.)
