Gratuitous Space Battles

Anyone else play this? Just got it yesterday. Good, clean fun. I see this as being one of those "5-minute distraction" kind of games, for when I don't have a lot of time to kill and I just want to do something fun for a few minutes.

Anyone got any tips, strategies, good stories?

I have the entire collection, though I didn't enjoy the campaign update as much I as hoped and I stopped playing it not long after.

Don't forget to go back to missions after you've purchased some better tech to milk some more points out of them.

"Gratuitous space battles" is a contradiction in terms, much like "gratuitous sex scene".

It's probably a bad sign that I actually have to look at my list of Steam games to tell if I have the game in question. Yes I do. Haven't played it. Looks fun, but I'm addicted to Toy Soldiers on Xbox right now, so it will remain one of the 100+ games I own that I haven't gotten around to touching yet for now :(

I picked up at last years Steam sale. It was a lot of fun, but got repetitious after about a week. Still, I'd say I got my $6 worth.

Yeah, i got that one when it came out on Steam.
I found it quite fun even though you do need a lot of try and error to figure out some of the workings of shields, armour and weapon stats.

Hmm, general tips:
Dont let your fighters just attack, unless your going for a mostly fighter based armada.
Have them escort your cruisers in a fairly wide radius, so that they protect you against enemies and shoot other capitals engaging your ships.

Frigates die a lot in direct combat with cruisers, unless you set their weapon ranges so that they "dance" out of range.
That means they do not a lot of damage, so I build them cheap and in greater numbers, with the right cooperative orders they deal quite a bit of damage before exploding.

Cruisers are your main weapon in all missions which allow them. There are different strategies, from the long range "all Missiles, no Engines" Spam to formations with Cruisers with heavy shield/Armour and point defences + repair in front to soak damage until you are close enough to kill the enemy with the weapons only cruisers flying behind.

Have fun! :techman:

I seem to recall my biggest dissapointment was there was no time delay command. As in 'wait here until _____ , then attack'.

Hmmm, readign this thread, I'm getting the urge to reinstall and download the strategy update.
