Grandpa Simpson

So when do you think they'll transition Abe "Grandpa" Simpson from being a WWII vet into a Vietnam vet?

Since the Simpsons will apparently never be cancelled I say it has to happen eventually. My guess is sometime in 2011.

What say you? What other milestone changes are inevitable? (Skinner jumping from Vietnam to Desert Storm will probably happen in the same episode, I'd wager.)

Well, according to the current timeline, Bart would have been born in 2000.

Which has Homer being born in 1972. Hippie mom, then, wouldn't have left Abe until 1978. Maybe Jimmy Carter drove her crazy with the "lust in his heart."

Where are the continuity purists when you need them?

Meh. The past few seasons where they've updated the timelines to be more conducive to a family with a 10 year old boy in 2010 irritated the hell out of me. Why even bother making Homer and Marge get together in 1994 instead of 1974? It's not like people watching now are fresh viewers who think this show is brand new.

What makes the Simpsons so great is that they don't pay attention to their own continuity. They've mentioned this on air several times.

Marge and Homer could not have seen Empire Strikes Back when they were in high school, at least not first run as the episode implies.

See, if they were smart, they should have made that part of the joke. The show has been going on for over two decades now, and the characters haven't aged a day. Alluding to that while at the same time not changing a damn thing about the continuity would fit perfectly with the irreverent humor of the show.

They should've just aged the characters chronologicaly from the begining. It would've been an inovative way to treat an animated series, esp. now that the show has been on for an eon.

That's annoying. I haven't watched regularly in about 8 years. I'm kind of glad about that. To me the big episode is still trying to figure out who shot Mr. Burns!

I think they still should...pull a 'Desperate Housewives' and just jump into the future.

Restore all the original timeframes...make Bart 30 years old, Homer is 58, Grandpa is dead...etc etc.

I'm thinking that EVERYONE will say that the show has jumped the shark then, but so what? Like it didn't already? Please. That season would be the best one in quite some time. They're just afraid people will say they're out of ideas. Well, duh. What else do they have to lose?

And don't just give us old versions of current characters like past "future shows" have done. Forget Ralph Wiggum or old Smithers or whatever. Create a whole freak'n new show with people like Rod Flanders and Apu's kids as main characters...the kids we really don't know all that much about.

Yeah, people would trash it. But I bet they'd change their minds once they saw it. It could be fantastic.

Sheesh...

It's just a fucking cartoon, as long as it's funny why does it matter?

I'm not saying it isn't funny, but I don't watch it anymore so I don't care.

Best Episode Ever...and it's 15 years old!

The Simpsons is a show that I am amazed is still on. Not because of its quality, but because I don't know a single person who actually watches it anymore!

Up until about Season 13 I watched it religiously. After that it became more rare, until about season 15, which I nearly stopped completely. I have recently picked it up again, starting this Season, and I'm figuring out that I didn't really miss anything from Seasons 16-19. I still have every season on DVD, from 1 to 13 and then Season 20, even though Season 20 makes me have angry sounds because there's no commentary or extras.

I used to watch reruns of it every day after school, so much that I memorized the episode order. I always used to get excited when certain episodes came around. But at some point newer episodes started entering the rerun rotation, and there just weren't specific episodes that I looked forward to anymore. They stopped having any kind of emotional impact (believe it or not, it wasn't always about goofy cartoon antics).

I think I would love to go back and rewatch some of those older episodes.

Hell, there were Simpsons episodes that would make me tear up. The writers knew how to create emotional impact and show how much we loved the characters. Then the show became nothing more than a sounding board for cheap jokes that were as obvious as a Leno comedy routine.

That was actually one thing I liked about the Simpsons Movie. It gave Homer and Marge some serious marriage stuff to deal with again. Their romance was always a favorite part of the show for me.

I completely agree.
I believe one of the sweetest moments for me was the story about Bart's first word. The flashback was great, the story was sweet, and Maggie at the very end just brought me right to the edge of tears. It was so heartfelt and wonderfully done.
