Gotta Love Cable...

My wife works for the cable company, so we have every tier and every channel available. Best thing on? Ten year old episodes of Cops.

I'd be pissed if I didn't get it at a substantial discount.

If that's the best you can find, I think the problem may be more your taste than what's available.

I don't watch much current television, aside from My Little Pony. There just isn't much content that appeals to me. If it's not a reality show about people being suckered into selling something cheap, or how huge someone's tits are, it's a show where someone is getting murdered/raped/assaulted/defrauded in one form or another, and I'm just not into any of that.

I agree. Most of today's TV is shit. Pretty much everything I've watched for the last ten years (with the exception of The 4400), has been remakes of stuff that I watched as a kid, or even when my mom was a kid.

One good thing about today though is the existence of the DVD. That let's you pick and choose, and you don't have to sit though commercials.

So many great things on yesterday, I ended up watching a couple of discs from The Simpsons season seven. :techman:

I got rid of cable a year ago. Don't miss it one damn bit.

The only show I still watch is Law & Order: SVU, and I can get that from iTunes.

I "cut the cord" and dropped my cable service over two years ago. No regrets. I am not home enough to watch a lot of TV. The few shows I do watch I can wait for on DVD or watch online if available. Works fine for me.

If it weren't for live sports, my cable would probably be long gone.

Oh, that's ridiculous. There's plenty of great, original TV on today if you ignore network television. Doctor Who and Game of Thrones alone makes TV worth watching. Cartoons are also absolutely brilliant these days with Adventure Time, My Little Pony, Legend of Korra, Young Justice, and Avengers currently airing.

There's always something for me to watch on cable. Frequently, I have a problem of skipping a show I like that's currently on to watch or record something else.

I don't watch that much television myself -- generally if I'm sitting on my ass in front of a screen I'd rather be playing a video game -- but it's not because of lack of shows to watch. There's a few new shows I'd really like to get into, but I'm already behind on the shows I already watch. No point in getting into something new.

My available library is even bigger than the Comcast cable I just got rid of, I have 5 streaming video services...and if I needed to, can add anything I want from the www.

RAMA

TV--whether broadcast or cable is shit. Reality garbage, stale procedurals, piss poor sff, MTV doesn't even play videos except late at night, VH1 is BET 2.0, SyFy sucks, DISCovery channe only shows bridesmaid dresses andkid pageants, OWN--I can see why it has lost 330 million dollars, Spike aka the testosterone channel, E! aka Krappy Kardashian channel, USA aka Law and Order channel, CNN got rid of its best personalities/anchors a decade ago, MSNBC I can't even watch, the various cartoon channels are loaded with crap .

The only channels I watch I watch because it shows reruns of tv shows from back in the day when writers could actually write
Hallmark--Golden GIrls and Murder She Wrote reruns
HUB-1966 Batman series, 1980s Transformers
TVLand-Threes Company, Roseanne reruns
Toon-Young Justice
Boomerang--Scooby Doo, Where are You?

Other than that I watch DVDs of Trek series--even as mediocre as VOY was it is light years ahead of the crap that passes for entertainment nowadays

TV has never been worse in my life.

Yep. If it weren't for my DVDs/Netflix, I wouldn't watch much of anything.

I haven't had a chance to watch Legend of Korra, yet, though I likely will. I do watch My Little Pony, but Adventure Time, Young Justice, Avengers, those shows don't really do anything for me. Like I said, I just don't find much on cable TV that appeals to me.

There's a fair amount of current TV shows I enjoy. Though I don't really have cable, I have Freesat but no pay channels. Sherlock, Doctor Who, Merlin, Being Human, Mad Men, Fringe, The Hour, Downton Abbey, Supernatural, Grandma's House, 10 O'Clock Live, Misfits, Breaking Bad, Never mind the buzzcocks, QI, Have I Got News for You, 8 out of 10 Cats, The Walking Dead, Castle, Archer. That's just off the top of my head and not to mention various documentaries and one offs.

Cable's different over here though isn't it.

Sky have done Mad Dogs, and Dave have commissioned a new series of Red Dwarf, but beyond that the burden of UK TV production still largely falls on the terrestrial or mainstream networks.

It's a shame really. With the amount of $$$ that Sky rakes in from its subscribers it certainly has the resources to fund quality drama. Instead, they seemingly plough it all back into sports instead, like the football rights, and the F1 rights.

Well as much as I'd hate to say it, Sky have invested a lot in the last year or two. Still only about the budget of E4 across their channels but it has lead to Mad Dogs, Strike Back, Stella, Angina Monologues, Spy, Bedlam getting a second series, Treasure Island and the upcoming Sinbad, as well as a new Play for Today type series on Sky Arts.

I love my DVR. Before getting it, I was one of those people that said, "there's nothing on TV." Between work, the gym, and some mock semblance of a social life, all that was on when I was home were infomercials and reality shows. Now, I watch pretty much every current drama I have an interest in, old movies, and old TV shows, some of which are not available on DVD. For me, the DVR made Cable worth having again.

Yes, I knew I'd forgotten something - Strike Back.

Whilst it's true that they've upped their game I suppose, Mad Dogs, Strike Back, Spy and Bedlam account for about one full season's worth of television per year?

It's a start, but more please.
