Gordon Ramsey's choice...

Star Trek has, over existence, showed various alien kinds of food...from Grub Worms, to Gagh, to Romulan Soup, and even Vulcan Pea Soup (did I get that right)..any way, from what you know of the food choices out there in the Trek Universe, which "alien" food variety would you favor??

Me? I think I'd love Klingon food. As some of you know, I was in the Navy for over 20 years, and I loved eating food in the many exotic places I visited. And Klingon food looks very spicey, and rich in flavor..

Feringi food? No way...I think of that Mirkat on LION KING when I think of what they eat...not sure why...but I do.

Bajoran food looks very 'middle eastern' to it, even Greek in someways, and probably would be very flavorable to eat too..

What about you? What alien food would do you think you would like most??? And which do you think Gordon Ramsey would favor...

I was just thinking about a topic like this, but rather than Gordon Ramsey, I was thinking of Andrew Zimmern of the show Bizarre Foods (I love it!). As you probably tell, Zimmern has a taste for international foods off the beaten path, and sometimes that means running into plates of clams that cost a couple Mexican pesos, but would otherwise be hundreds of dollars in NYC, LA, or Paris; conversely, that means eating animals, insects, and animal body parts that one would normally not consider, and that whole exploration of taste is what makes it all the more worthwhile. And hey, some of the foods he does come across look very tasty.

With all that said, I think Zimmern could spend a whole life time hopping from planet to planet, just trying out the cuisine. Would he go for gagh? Probably. Would he try a centuries-old recipe of specially-seasoned gagh littered with bugs and tentacles from some small Klingon farming village in the midst of Qo'nos wilderness? Definitely.

I can picture Ramsey as a Klingon chef swearing and throwing things at his staff and customers.

Hmm...Bajoran food looks interesting and I'd WANT to try it, but we'd have to assume that 24th-century treatments for acid reflux are a lot more effective so that I could actually handle the spices without getting sick.

Cardassian food...I'd have to pick and choose, but from what I've seen and heard described, there might be some things I would really like. Sem'hal stew, for instance--if you ignore the color, it looks like something I had in a Vietnamese restaurant and really liked. (I wish I could remember what I ate...a friend ordered it for me and I had no idea what I was getting into until it came to the table! None of the other non-Asians at the table liked it, but I did.) I get a VERY strong vibe of Southeast Asian food when I see descriptions of Cardassian food, and considering I'll eat damn near anything in an Asian restaurant (that's not too spicy for me to handle), I bet I'd have the best luck with theirs. I might even be able to develop a tolerance to fish juice, depending on how exactly it's made. Just cook my taspar eggs, please, and hold the kanar. ;)

EDIT: I THINK what I had at the Vietnamese restaurant was Phở. That, to me, looks like something a Cardassian would eat. (And so would I!) Mine, however, did not have the rare beef featured in the picture.

I love Gordon Ramsey!!! His HELL'S KITCHEN and KITCHEN NIGHTMARES are two of my favorite show on TV. And yes, wouldn't he make the best Klingon chef???? I wonder how he would grade Benjamin Sisko's food???

Nerys -- I'm a big, big, big fan of pho. I'm pretty sure that if we ever get up to the stars and meet many space faring civilizations, that they would quickly warm up to a bowl of pho :)

Gordon would make for a fantastic klingon chef, of course, though something tells me one of his specialties would be Bajoran cuisine, seeing as how it's supposed to be one of the hottest and spiciest cuisines in the Alpha Quadrant. Hasperat itself is supposedly legendary for its tendency to sear the tongue.

Oh, and this spread of Klingon food makes me hungry: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Image:Klingon_cuisine.jpg

It's Gordon RamsAy, you donkeys!

Gordon could make Ferengi cuisine tasty and attractive.

You Donkeys!!!..I love it...you had the inflection down to a tee...I hope Gordon doesn't see that I messed up the spelling of his name. I better watch my back!!!

I'm not so sure. Whenever I think of Cardassian food, I've always thought of sushi with some take on ancient Roman garum (which was a fermented fish sauce, often mackerel-based.) On the other hand, I like most varieties of cooked seafood. So maybe if there was a regional variant...? Other than that, Bajoran food sounds appealing. Maybe Romulan food, but I don't think we've had a wide exposure to their cuisine.

Klingon food, no thanks. I like my food dead/not moving before I eat it. And tube grubs, the first thing that comes to mind when I think "Ferengi food," brings a similar "ick" reaction.

But the single best thing I think I've heard of is I'danian spice pudding. I like dessert, what can I say?

If I were going to try the food of any alien civ on Star Trek, it would be Romulan. Their dishes, and the animals that some of them are prepared from, seem relatively close to those of western civilization on Earth, compared to other species. They cook their food. And they share with me a tendency to eat all of one thing before starting on another. (Damn you, John Schneider!!!) (10pts if you know why I'm saying that.)

I don't think Gordon would necessarily show a preference for one species' dishes over another, but his message would be the same as it always is: do a relatively limited number of dishes, keep them simple, and do them right. Clean, basic fare.

Today we're doing a cultural fusion of Klingon gagh in Cardassian yamock sauce... it's fresh, fragrant, rustic fare, beautifully seasoned.

I've always wanted to try plomeek soup from Vulcan. I've envisioned it like some sort of tomato cream or bisque. That and Bajoran food does look like one of the best cuisines out there. I've also imagined Cardassian Regova eggs to be something like Deviled eggs (one of my specialties) but I could be totally off base. Add some yamock (mustard?) sauce! I'll pass on the Taspar.

That Phở looks good btw.

I watch him a LOT. BIG fan.

I've been a fan of cooking shows since I was a very little boy. My mom says I used to watch The Galloping Gourmet obsessively when I was a toddler.

If you're a fan as well, I think you might be interested in this, yes?

Actually I am not all that well versed in alien cusine, Klingon--no way, Bajorian could be interesting, Cardassian, probably not, Breen, NOT. Since the Founders do not even eat, that are not an option. So, when push come to shove I'll take Joseph Sisko Resturant in the Big Easy, for my choice of cusine. His Gumbo is really great according to Benjamine, and his word is good enough for me...

Basill--We never got to see what taspar eggs are like cooked. They could be a lot better than when raw. I mean, would you eat a raw chicken egg?? :cardie:

Now, the way you describe the regova eggs sounds awesome. Come to think of it, you're probably right about what they're most like!

I mean, would you eat a raw chicken egg?? :cardie:
You'd drink it raw - and plenty of people do. In homegrown protein mixes that bodybuilders mix up, amongst other things.

And if you've ever had eggs cooked soft or over easy, where there's still a lot of runny yolk and/or albumin, that's not far off at all, either.

If Ramsay were a Klingon, would you insult his honour if you didn't like his food? You'd have to be careful what you ordered or you'd find yourself in a fight to the death!
