Goodbye Leno/Hello Conan

Exodus, I disagree. The Tonight Show has been an institution in Hollywood since the middle of Johnny Carson's run.

That said, I wouldn't mind him coming back to NYC for a week or two.

I liked the cold open with Conan running across America, running through the gate at Universal, forgetting his keys, then essentially making one of his own. Very Conan, and that bit alone proves he'll be great on The Tonight Show.

Loved the fact that Andy is now the announcer. Seems like it's coming full circle with Ed McMahon being the announcer for Johnny, and now Andy will be the same for Conan.

With Conan now officially entrenched as host of The Tonight Show, I'll miss Jay. I liked his era, as well as many of the running gags in it. He exit was classy and non-chalant. Even though he'll be back in primtime in the fall, I honesty don't think that will hurt Conan. If anything, it'll help him, because in the end, it's The Tonight Show.

Johnny who?:p

Seriously, I'm not saying he should or will. All I am saying is(give peace a chance) it would be nice to have a good late night talk show in NYC besides Letterman. That was actually the point I was trying to make.

I have never really understood why people bash Leno. He's a funny guy and he seems really nice and personable. You don't get to be the host of The Tonight Show by having zero comedy skills.

To break it down to really simple terms, you can tell Jay was never "the cool guy", whereas Conan probably likely was running with "the cool crowd" when he was in high school and college. Conan just has that personality and disposition about him that would let him easily move back and forth between the more self centered hot shots. Whereas Jay was more likely the funny guy that hung out with the not so popular kids, though he himself certainly has the talent to get the beautiful people to laugh too, but his personality and looks don't translater well into their domain. I will miss Jay, I liked how down to Earth and easy going he was.

David Letterman is cranky and sour. Why I don't know, OK so he never got The Tonight Show, big deal Dave. He's had his own late night show for 25+ years, he has a life people can dream of.

Craig Ferguson is AWESOME.

Jimmy Fallon, he's not that funny at all and often seems nervous. Strange thing, when he was a guest on The Tonight Show he was very funny and his comedy skills really emerged. But when he's the host of his own talk show, wow the guy just isn't that good.

I look forward to Conan. I missed his first show last night but will tune in to see the second tonight. He's got a totally different style from Leno. Conan is smart (I mean he went to Harvard), sophisticated (Harvard again), more stylish and elegant. But he's also got a crude form of humour that appeals to the more intellecutal college crowd, like "yeah this joke is raw and silly, but we're making fun of society, so it's really smart!!!"

Is there any ratings information on Conan's debut? But more importantly, is there ratings info on how Jimmy Fallon is doing? I really wonder if he's crashing and burning or what.

Can't tell you about Fallon, but Conan did really good numbers.

You want to know the difference between Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien?

Jay Leno would never kill Tom Hanks with a meteor.

The real late night energy is Craig Ferguson, absolutely hilarious. I don't know that I believe him though when he says he's given up drugs. Nobody has that much energy. :)

NBC needs to wake up, toss Fallon out on his keester, and give Ferguson a blank check to jump ship to Late Night. (Also, he's a recovering alcoholic, not a drug addict.)

He's doing fine(sadly)

From the AP:
NEW YORK — Jimmy Fallon enjoyed a healthy win in the ratings his first week on the air.
NBC's "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" attracted an average 2.4 million viewers the week of March 2, against CBS' "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," which averaged 1.9 million viewers, according to final Nielsen figures released Thursday.
In their opening night clash, Fallon scored 2.9 million viewers against Ferguson's 1.9 million.
On that March 2 debut, Fallon also beat ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" during their overlapping half-hour by 100,000 viewers. "Jimmy Kimmel Live" begins 30 minutes earlier.

‘Late Late Show' bests ‘Late Night' for first time since Fallon takes host chair

By Alex Weprin -- Broadcasting & Cable, 3/17/2009 10:40:53 AM MT

The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson topped Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Monday night, according to late night metered market households data from Nielsen.

Fallon drew a 1.6 rating/6 share to Ferguson's 1.8 rating/6 share. That is despite two strong premiere weeks and a buzzed about performance by Public Enemy and Fallon house band The Roots Monday night.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon launched March 2 to strong ratings, easily topping Craig Ferguson and Jimmy Kimmel in the timeslot for his first two weeks on the air. In fact, Fallon has been topping his predecessor Conan O'Brien's average Late Night rating this season.

Ferguson had been catching up to O'Brien leading up to the transition to Fallon, even topping him among certain demographics some weeks.

With viewers having had a couple weeks to check out Fallon's Late Night as well as sample the competition, the ratings are beginning to drop to more average levels for the 12:30 timeslot. Whether Fallon can maintain the consistent 18-49 demo wins that his predecessor brought will likely become clearer in the coming weeks.

Heh Conan likes to throw props at Tom Hanks. I remember about 10 years ago they were doing a show around Christmas-time and Conan dumped a crap ton of fake snow on him.

Actually in that bit he gave Tom Hanks an animal skeleton in a Christmas present and said it was Hooch.

So Hooch got another mention in tonights appearance too with the musical ;)

So far I'm liking the new Tonight Show.

Tom Hanks and Conan has always been a great combo. Anyone remember when Conan gave Tom a painting of Astronauts landing at Normandy? Damn do I want that painting, it was the most awesome thing in the history of man.

Conan and Tom plugged Star Trek pretty strongly, which was cool. I can't help but notice that Tom screwed up by saying "The City on the Edge of Tomorrow". :guffaw: He did get quite a few other though so I'll let it slide.

Leno is a great guy, awesome guy, but he just isn't funny on the show. I used to watch him many years ago and all his jokes were pervert jokes. He plays to the dumbest people in America and I can't stand that.

Yes he is...

Ferguson isn't doing it for the money. I honestly believe he might stop doing the show once his 6 year contract is up. He is very loyal to David Letterman for giving him the chance to do the show, and no amount of money would move him from CBS right now.

No he is also recovering from drug abuse, he used everything in the 80s.

I agree on that, I have no problem with him as a person, he did a free show for the unemployed here in the Detroit area just to help during the economic slump (even making sure the show had free parking), but I just prefer other hosts for entertainment.

I liked the bit with Obama commenting on the transition from Leno to Conan. I'm surprised that they got Obama to do something like that.

NBC claims that it was very much real and was part of Brian Williams recent day in the life of the Obama White House. They showed it again on MSNBC this morning.
