Good TNG Books?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to get into the TNG related books, but haven't got a clue where to start

Are they in a certain order, trilogies, series' etc?

Are there different authors - if so, which ones are recommended and which ones are to be avoided?

Any help or recommendations would be awesome

Are you after those set AFTER the events in "Star Trek: Nemesis" or more interested in stories set during the TV series etc?

During the TV series, I love the following:
Contamination
A Call To Darkness
Reunion
Dark Mirror
Here There Be Dragons
among many others.

Set after "Nemesis", my favourite is "Death In Winter", which is also conveniently the first novel chronologically set after the films (e.g. Data's dead, Riker and Troi have left for their own ship etc). Most people will say the "Destiny" trilogy, but to be honest, I am so fed up of the Borg being used whenever storytellers don't have any better or more original ideas.

My favourite Trek authors are Michael Jan Friedman and John Vornholt, so anything by those two I'd pretty much recommend!!

For me, Masks was a great numbered TNG novel.

And everything from Death in Winter and beyond, including Destiny, is fantastic. Well, I guess there are a few exceptions...but for the most part, they are worthy of a read.

You do realize that Destiny was specifically designed to get rid of the Borg for precisely that reason, don't you?

"Destiny" had many original ideas. How else do you tell an "end of the Borg" arc without using the Borg?

In any case, TV ratings and box office receipts tended to show that time travel and the Borg, two oft-complained about themes, were extremely popular ST topics. If people keep showing they like 'em, the producers tend to keep making 'em.

A TNG-era mirror universe where the Terran Empire never fell. Body swapping fun between Enterprise-D crews, and a talking dolphin.

Reunion
Picard's old Stargazer crew reunite, but one's turned murderer (spawned a prequel, Valiant and a six-book Stargazer series)

Vendetta
Borg vs. Planet Killer, Guinan's "soul sister"

Metamorphosis
Advanced aliens grant Data his wish to become human.

The Captain's Honor
Return of the space Romans from TOS, who are now misfit Federation members. The M'dok (the Kzinti, renamed due to legal issues) attack a planet. Picard vs. Roman Picard-alike.

Imzadi
How Riker met Troi, told in flashback form by a bitter old Admiral Riker.

Q-Squared
Trelane, from "The Squire of Gothos", starts messing around with four timelines. Q tries to stop him and all hell breaks loose. One of the alternates stars Jack Crusher as captain of the Enterprise.

Do what I did, go on Memory Beta, call up the list of TNG Novels and just scroll through until you see a title you like! Most of them can be found on Amazon and websites like that!

It's worth noting that this novel is in many respects a sequel to Jean Lorrah's previous TNG novel, Survivors, which is also worthwhile, particularly if one is a Tasha Yar fan. Both novels were contradicted to some extent by later canon (for instance, they both assume that Data is capable of emotion albeit inexperienced with it, since they were written before the "no emotions" retcon was introduced in season 3), but that doesn't detract from their worth as stories.

My favorites were Dark Mirror, The Return, A Time To Heal (which should be preceded by A Time To Kill), and The Romulan Prize (which I haven't read since elementary school, but loved at the time).

There's also the TOS/TNG crossover novel Federation, which features a very different version of Zephram Cochrane (and the invention of warp drive, and World War III) to the one that would appear in First Contact a few years later.

I'd have mentioned that novel, too, but the TNG portions are the book's weakest aspect. The segments featuring Cochrane are outstanding.
