Good or bad Klingons in XII?

There's been lots of speculation about reinventing Khan. Personally, I'd rather see them reinvent the original series' other Ks - Kor, Koloth and Kang.

They were far too under-used in the original series and I wish they'd appeared in TSFS or TUC. Imagine them in their prime taking on the ENT with modern day SFX and Klingon make-up. It would be, well, glorious.

One thing I loved in TUC was that Chang and Gorkon were of the same age as the Enterprise crew ("our generation will have the toughest time adapting to the future"). It would be interesting if in addition to the TOS Klingons you mentioned above Kirk and/or Spock/Uhura met a young, verbose Klingon diplomat or commander with politiocal leanings (or maybe an intelligence officer assigned to study Human culture) who shares with them a love of Shakespeare. After saving their life or helping them escape he says his name is Gorkon... I should probably just write fanfiction but I'm too lazy.

Sorry, didn't read the whole thread but based solely on the Title, my first thought was that a Cold War between the Klingons & the Fed ( + other species?) should be going on.

IIRC that was a major theme in TOS around this time.

All that said, I really hope the next film's story isn't about them though. They should be present and as such be steering events to some degree but I want TPTB to prove to me that other aspects of Classic Star Trek haven't been cut completely off in the reboot...

Does this Verse contain flying pancakes?

No more foul-smelling barbarians!

It would be nice to go back to a more TOS approach to the Klingons - they can be pretty darn bad, but they also can have an air of refinement or sophistication to them. I mean, look at Koloth in "The Trouble with Tribbles". That characterization as presented there is hardly like what you would expect from a cardboard cut-out TNG-era Klingon. I believe a fan once asked William Campbell if he could speak some Klingon. He replied with something along the lines of "Why sure... 'My dear Captain Kirk!'"

I know the big three TOS Klingons were brought back in DS9 "Blood Oath", but it seemed like they tried to transform them into TNG Klingons (and I'm not just talking about the makeup.) I think they did a lot better with Arne Darvin in "Trials and Tribble-ations", however.

Granted, TNG and DS9 developed Klingons a lot more than TOS - but then again, TOS was only three seasons and didn't have a main character who was Klingon. However, you could start with the premise of the less-barbaric TOS Klingons and simply develop them in a different direction. It is an alternate timeline, after all...

Regarding the whole Cold War issue - it was a very interesting dynamic, but why do it again? Besides, it's the 21st century - maybe they should explore an adversarial relationship that's more relevant to today.

Basically, I wouldn't want them to do Klingons at all if they just do what's been done for the past twenty years - it's been done to death. Mix it up, please. There will never be a better opportunity.

I think this guy's take on the Klingons is spot on. It's sufficiently TOS-ish while still being consistant with the post-TOS Klingons. I think the combination of Ottoman and Soviet influences works particularly well.

As for the good Klingons vs. bad Klingons... the best approach might be to split the difference and have Kirk and co. fighting some Klingons until an alien threat show up that is so horrible and terrifying that they have to team up with the Klingons to defeat it.

I'd make the Klingons a mix of heroes and villains. Just as there are heroes and villains in The Federation / Starfleet. I've found fan fiction a bit lop-sided in that sense. Too black and white, too rigid.

But now there's the option of including or excluding the Romulan-Klingon-Human hybrid "augment" world, Chal, in the "Shatnerverse" of Trek Lit. We've got B'elanna Torres. Let's explore the possibilities a little further.

Well, I've already said this in another thread, the Narada and her 24th century technology (not to mention the Borg components) had been in Klingon hands for twenty five years! They must have taken a closer look at the technology and upgraded their fleet - who could ignore such a huge tactical advantage?

Given that, it's almost impossible to ignore them in the next movie. It would be the logical thing for them to either attack the Romulans or the Federation, their biggest competitors in the quadrant.

I don't want any Klingons in an important role in Trek XII. They already have far too many appearances. Cardassians would be a better idea. But if they indeed appear, they should be neither good or bad, just three-dimensional characters with much less talk about Kahless and honor.

Doesn't matter. Klingons are essentially a biker gang in space. They ACT really badass, but they're remarkably easy to beat up if you actually fight them...

Remember when the Klingons tried to invade Deep Space Nine? That was when the Star Trek fans I know coined the phrase "popcorn ship." Later, when the Klingon boarding parties were about to beam onto Deep Space Nine, Gowron first shouted something to them in Klingon. I ***SWEAR*** there was a subtitle at the bottom of the screen that said, "Get them, my Putties!!!"

Personally, I hate the romanticizing that overtook klingons starting with TNG. They were the badass villains. They stole cloaking technology from the Romulans, they plotted assasinations, they enslaved worlds, they committed genocide. They were badass, not these 'honorable' weaklings they were transformed into. And I use the term honorable lightly, given how low many of their actions were.

I would like to see both bad and good Klingons...or maybe something in between would be the best.
Hell, a Klingon villain we could at least a little sympathise with could be very cool:klingon:. I do definetly want to see Klingons in the next film. I hope they keep the ship desing we saw in the Kobayashi Maru simulation...but I would not mind seeing some new Klingon ships along side them, too:cool:

That's more how I think of the Orions - a criminal enterprise that's well organized enough that it just becomes a whole planetary culture. (And they would be worth seeing more of, too. How for instance do Orions see other Orions who serve in Starfleet? Are they traitors? Hopelessly uncool?)

The Klingons gotta have their honor - it's their defining gimmick, after all - so that they fight more for the love of fighting than being effective or achieving some goal.

Orions would run away if they didn't think they'd make money or get anywhere in a fight. Klingons wouldn't. You could have either of them being nice or nasty depending on the scenario, regardless of their underlying motive.

I'd like to see the Klingons attack the Romulans as a result of the Narada's attack on the warbird armada - and for the Romulans to then come to the Federation begging for help.
