Golden Showers

Waterworld, Thunderball, Aybss, Titanic, Jaws, Phantom Menace, and others, all movies that require heavy use of the ocean, over and or above it, to make the movie work.

What is your favorite movie of all time (scifi or not, doesn't matter) where the ocean plays a major part of the story or backdrop?

And...was this movie a hit or flop? Because many ocean made movies, the Abyss being one, are well liked but sometimes fall short in Box office. Is there gold in Ocean movies or not?

Addressing the er, um, topic of the thread, my favorite use of the ocean in a movie would probably be Castaway.

Straight into the gutter you go!!!...

There was this comedy, dreadful to most I dare say, called HELLO DOWN THERE. I liked it though..

But my pick for favorite ocean/made movie would be JAWS. I like how you can see islands, safety in the distance, yet no attempt is ever made to swim to shore..ever fearful that the shark my eat them...

Master and Commander! Almost completely in the ocean. It did pretty well at the B.O.- not a huge blockbuster, but hardly a flop.

That's another good one:)

I also remember being fond of Hornblower (Both the 50s film and the series)

Das Boot. Really made you feel the stress of sub warfare. Also, Mr. Roberts. One of my all-time favs.

Leviathan with Peter Weller was a decent underwater monster flick. Gray Lady Down was a good movie with Charleton Heston. A U.S. submarine is struck by a cargo ship and sunk and the crew needs rescuing.

Another interesting movie was a tv movie: Goliath Awaits. A passenger ship is sunk by a German sub in WWII. Parts of the ship are airtight and the survivors live in their own little world under the sea for 40 years until Mark Harmon shows up to rescue them.

Agreed about The Abyss, Castaway and U-571. I'll throw in Pirates of the Caribbean and Titanic, too.
