Sadly, I suspect the only way for the thieves to dispose of this item would be to melt it down for its gold. More hopefully, it was stolen to order for a collector of space memorabilia and will eventually be recovered.
The problem with an unscrupulous collector wanting it, who's he gonna show it off to? Maybe some of his elitist buddies, but that's about it.
Some people just like to hoard collectable items and feel smug (or should that be Smaug?) that no-one else has access to them. Such people usually don't have friends. I'm thinking in particular of certain people who likely have the only copies of otherwise lost Dr Who episodes.

It's either some yutz who's going to melt it down or the theft was "commissioned" by a private collector. A professional wouldn't steal such an item without having "disposal" already covered. I've been to the Armstrong museum, right off the freeway, you could be a hundred miles away in an hour and a half.
And depending on how well they're stored, they've got reels of gooey vinegar by now.
