That's right, I'm talking about Intellivision. Now, for those too young or unaware, Intellivision was Mattel's video game system in the 80s. It was a lot of fun, with a huge variety of games.

Well, the company is working to release a new console and will be announcing more in October this year. I might be alone in this camp, but I loved this console. Creative games, including a voice synthesizer unit that talked to you, and one of the first Civilization style games in Utopia.

I have a healthy appreciation for retro gaming and computing, and I know the Intellivision was around in the UK back in the day, but I don't think it was particularly big over here. I've certainly never seen one in person, though I'd love to have a go on one.

The early 80s were mainly dominated by the 8-bit microcomputers like the Spectrum (which also has a new version coming out imminently), C64, BBC Micro/Acorn Electron, etc. I think the Atari 2600 did better than the Intellivision, but consoles didn't really become mainstream until later, with the Sega Master System and the tail end of the NES's lifespan.

I was generally more of a C64 kid, but I feel like I remember playing some weird Dracula game on the Intellivision back in the day at a friend's house. So there's that.

Funny story. There's an Intellivision sitting in my basement. My buddy gave it to me and I hadn't tried it out yet.
Well, I went to plug it in and try it out the other day (it's been sitting in that box for the past 20 years or so) and the game boxes it came with were empty!! I had nothing to play at all this time anyway since I'd never looked inside the game boxes. Lock n Chase, Poker & Black Jack and Baseball. Lock n' Chase is a great game - generally any port I've played is fun.

We used to have a Gemini back in the day, it wasn't as sexy as the other consoles but it played Coleco and Atari games. Recently turned my old Galaxy 6 into a dedicated emulator and love it. Great use for a beater phone. Takes some getting used to the screen as a joystick of course. So that's how I am getting my fix these days...
