Godzilla, Kong, Gamera & Co.: The Kaiju Mega-Thread

Godzilla x Kong, huh? Reminds me of how some of the Japanese kaiju films have been titled, with the "X" representing tai, "versus/against." I wonder how it's pronounced here. "Godzilla ex Kong?" "Godzilla times Kong?" "Godzilla and Kong?"

This latest entry in the Monsterverse franchise follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottie are returning from GvK, with newcomers Dan Stevens, Fala Chen, and Rachel House. I hope they let Hall actually be the lead this time instead of feeling obligated to plug in yet another bland white man as the main character, like every previous Monsterverse film.

Not thrilled that Brian Tyree Henry's character is returning. Nothing against Henry himself, who has a magnificent voice, but paranoid conspiracy nuts ceased to work as a comical and endearing character type on January 6, 2021. Also, GvK was by far the worst and stupidest of the Monsterverse movies, so it troubles me that this sequel seems closely tied to it.

I'm never really sure how you're supposed to say it when they do the x thing either. I was just reading it Godzilla Kong, without including the x, when I saw it yesterday. With horses when you have a crossbreed you often write it with an x like that between the breeds, like Thorougbred x Quarter Horse for example, so that's the first place my mind goes when I see that.

I kid ;)
Gamera films were some of my favorites growing up in the late sixties/early seventies.
Gamera versus Gaos and the Gamera film with the American International title: Destroy All Planets were ones I would make it a point never to miss when I saw them in the TV Guide.

Okay, I realllllllly hope this movie is not about Godzilla and Kong interbreeding... Although there are probably videos of that online somewhere...

Seriously, though, I suppose it's conceivable that the big bad could be the result of some villain's plot to create a hybrid kaiju out of their combined DNA.

I kind of would have been happy to see this universe end at the last movie. I'm more interested to see what Toho do with Godzilla next.

I don't get the title. The new monster also seems like a rehash of Kong. Hope it's mecha Kong.

Godzilla is now a combining mecha. Sure why not.

Godzilla is the chest/body piece
Kamen Rider is the head
Ultraman is the left arm
Evangelion is the right arm

They made a physical suit and are releasing a deluxe figure. What are they cooking up?

I want to joke that maybe that this is a hint that they're making a Sentai movie but instead of Shin Gorenger it's going to be Shin Battle Fever J.

I learned earlier today that Yukiko Takayama, writer of "Terror of Mechagodzilla" and first major female crewmember on a Godzilla production who was handpicked for the job by Ishiro Honda, passed away on June 2 at the age of 83.

She later wrote a short story that was a quasi-sequel to the movie telling the story of a resurrected Titanosaurus in the far future. She also provided the story for a "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah" sequel that was ultimately abandoned/morphed into "Godzilla vs. Mothra: Battle for Earth".

Looks good. Do we know where in the Monsterverse timeline this takes place?

Judging from Kong's size, it looks closer in time to Kong: Skull Island than Godzilla vs. Kong.

I wonder if it will respect the continuity of the theoretically canonical tie-in comics involving Skull Island. Probably not. "Canonical" tie-ins are usually ignored by new screen canon.
