Godzilla, Kong, Gamera & Co.: The Kaiju Mega-Thread

Does seem rather random to release that one but I suppose it’s 20 years old now.
I’ll wait until next year for Final Wars. That’ll be a fun one to see on the big screen.

Is that highlights or is the whole thing only 3 minutes long?
Fathom Events has announced a one-day theatrical release of Tokyo SOS on 22 March in the United States. It will be in Japanese with English subtitles, and has the 2022 animated short Godzilla vs Gigan Rex as a pre-feature.

DId they show Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla first at some point or just jump straight to Tokyo SOS?

Yeah, similar to the Ultra Fight series of years past, Godzilla Island was shown within the context of other kids' shows with hosts and different segments.

No, Tokyo SOS has its anniversary this year, that's why it was chosen. I don't think there was a similar event for GxMG last year.

Oh, that's right. Forgot about that. In my defense, living in Europe I can't go to these events, anyway, and I posted about it six months ago, so it was easy to forget.

Huh! I remember a couple of years ago, maybe 2020 during the Pandemic lockdown, Toho permitted a small selection of the "Godzilla Island" episodes to be uploaded for a "limited engagement". So, this time Toho plans to to upload all 256 three minute segments? neat! At least close captioned subtitles are an option this time. I don't recall them being available during that limited run, but I could be mistaken, of course.

Huh! I see that Toho sanction page also has the entire run of the 1978 Godzilla cartoon from Hanna-Barbera, all 26 episodes. Makes one wonder if the FOX animated sequel to the 1998 movie might get hosted eventually? The rights to that design reverted to Toho in 2003 (which is why we saw it in "Final Wars"), so I wouldn't be that surprised.

The sequel animated series to “Zilla” is actually pretty good. More like the traditional Godzilla than the movie.

I watched the Lake and it was okay. It had some jarring edits which I wasn’t a fan of. It has a similar story to the British Kaiju movie, Gorgo with the little being captured causing the bigger one to come and get it. Difference being is that they make the little one a brutal killing machine. They should have killed it. They also try to imply that the bigger one is harmless to humans but there is one scene where it does Kill someone.
All in all it’s just an odd movie with some pretty impressive puppeteering work.

The trailer for Gamera: Rebirth just dropped. The animation is a little awkward, it feels like a mix between the Netflix Ultraman series and the Godzilla Earth trilogy. I would have preferred a visual style closer to Singular Point, but I assume that's a lot more expensive. It's hard to say much about the story yet, but it looks like they're going for something a little darker than The Brave, but not as intense as the Heisei films.

Hmm. I'm not a fan of cel-shaded animation with a deliberately low frame rate like that. I can get used to it, but it's not my preference.

So we're getting a new version of Jiger (the ceratopsian kaiju featured in the trailer), along with the Gyaos announced in the description, and several others. This is the first time that any Showa-Era Gamera kaiju other than Gamera and Gyaos have been reintroduced/redesigned on film, though some have been revived in comics.

I wouldn't be surprised if all six kaiju here are reinventions of the six Showa enemy kaiju -- Baragon, Gyaos, Viras, Guiron, Jiger, and Zigra. But they might skip one or more in favor of the Heisei-Era villains, Legion, Iris, and Zedus.

Yeah, the animation will take some getting used to, but otherwise this looks good. A bit like the Showa-era reimagined through the Shusuke Kaneko lense (that opening with the two soldiers certainly felt like a Kaneko thing).

The 1990 kiddy seriesis out

Btw, the G-Guard commander was played by Dan Jiro, who is maybe best known in the West as Go Hideki, the human form of Ultraman Jack. Sadly, he passed away on Wednesday.

Yeah, the animation is a little weird, but other than that it looks pretty good. My only familiarity with Gamera is the first two Heisei era movie, and I don't really remember them, so I'm more or less looking at this as a franchise newbie, and it does look like interesting.
I've been looking around on Amazon Prime Video and it turns out they have all of the Gamera movies, and a whole bunch of Showa era Godzilla movies.
They have:
Godzilla, King of the Monsters
Godzilla Raids Again
Son of Godzilla
Godzilla vs Megalon
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla [English Language Version]
Mothra vs Godzilla
Terror of Mechagodzilla
Ghidora, The Three Headed Monster
Destroy All Monster
Invasion of Astromonster

You're lucky. The original Showa-era Gamera series is mostly horrible -- cheap, dumb, and formulaic. It's astonishing how much it improved from Showa to Heisei, since the Heisei trilogy is probably the best kaiju cinema of that era, surpassing the Godzilla films, and Gamera the Brave is just as superb in a totally different way.

First teaser (or rather "title reveal") for Legendary's follow-up to Godzilla vs Kong:
