Godzilla, Kong, Gamera & Co.: The Kaiju Mega-Thread

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t...monster-tv-series-legendary-apple-1235078313/

A live-action Monsterverse series is coming to Apple+! The announcement doesn't actually say it's going to specifically focus on Godzilla, just that it will feature a family connected to Monarch, presumably the Russells. I'm surprised it's going to Apple and not Netflix since that's who Legendary seems to have the closest relationship with.
Apple+ probably outbid Netflix for the deal.

Oh, dear, I hope not. I'd be fine with a show centering on Millie Bobby Brown as Madison (as long as she was better written than she was in GvK), but Kyle Chandler's Mark was an obnoxious and unsympathetic character that GKOTM would've been better without, and whose inclusion in GvK was even more pointless. One of the biggest weaknesses of the Monsterverse has been its tendency to center its films on white male leads who are duller or less appealing than the other characters around them, and Mark was the worst example by far.

The article says the family has a legacy connected to Monarch, which suggests an older relationship to it than the Russells had. I suspect they'll be new characters, so the creators have free rein to develop them.

^And I question whether or not Millie Bobbi Brown would want to do a second series, when she still might have at least one more season of Stranger Things, and a bunch of movies already on her schedule.

Aliens I’m guessing. They haven’t done them yet.
Bring on Gigan!
2024 will be the 70th anniversary. I imagine it’ll debut then

Wasn't Ghidorah an alien? I thought his whole thing was that he was terriforming Earth to make it more like his homeworld, and he didn't follow Godzilla as the Alpha because he wasn't native to Earth.

He was indeed but I mean more humanoid aliens. They’re a big part of the franchise so I imagine them to show up at some point. They could easily be the secret cabal the synopsis is referring to

Another thought I had is that it could focus on Dr. Chen since we know her family has a long history with Monarch. That could then mean that the main titan is Mothra, not Godzilla.

Considering the series is set between Godzilla '14 and KotM, MBB has also aged out of the part. She's got talent to spare, but she can't really play a ten year old anymore.

All we know is it's after G2014. I don't take that as proof it's set before KOTM.

Well, the article says "... following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real...". Maybe I'm wrong, but the word "following" would suggest a certain immediacy. It's after, but not long after.

It does suggest that as a possibility, but we know that not much happened between films other than Godzilla doing a bit of policing of the titans. Setting it after GVK gives more freedom.

That would be good. I've always been quite fond of Zhang Ziyi. It would also be great if they bring back Joe Morton as Houston Brooks. (The "canonical" tie-in comics have him retire three years before Godzilla vs. Kong, but "canonical" tie-in books usually get tossed out as soon as a new film/TV production decides to go in a different direction.) I complained about the films' need to center on boring or obnoxious white men, but that's a symptom of the wider American feature industry being decades behind the curve when it comes to inclusive casting. TV is far better at inclusion, so there's a good chance that a Monsterverse TV series could center on a female or non-white lead. (The comics certainly did. The first one centered on Dr. Serizawa's father, the second on Houston Brooks's son, the third on Serizawa and Emma Russell, the fourth on Brooks and a female pilot named Burns, and the fifth was told entirely from Godzilla's POV.)

The last two comics, Kingdom Kong and Godzilla: Dominion, depict other kaiju incidents that occurred in that interval.

That would be cool as well. I always thought it was weird that they only had him for one brief scene in KOTM. There must have been more to his role that got cut.

I haven't read those yet. I'm waiting to see if they come up on Humble Bundle like some of the previous IDW and Monsterverse comics.

Considering this is a Japanese property, I hope that the main characters/ new family be Japanese, or atleast asian.

I do agree in that the humans of the latest godzilla movies have been .. meh.

The Hoopla online library has all the Monsterverse comics except the first one available for free borrowing, and I borrowed the first one in hardcover from my local library.

Agreed. It felt right to me that the first tie-in comic focused on the Serizawa family. It would be cool if the TV show focused on the next generation after Ishiro, in a better way than the throwaway "Ren Serizawa" character in GvK.

I remember one of those comical books which had them fighting in Edinburgh. That was fun
