Godzilla 2014: Rumors, Pix and filming

Did I see hints of another creature besides Godzilla? Towards the end there was something that looked like a really large hook/claw coming down on the ground.

Also, was that Hitaki from Helix?

Wouldn't that be the best viral media tie in ever if Helix turned out to be a prequel to Godzilla?

ETA:
On second viewing, it's not Hitaki but Ken Watanabe.

The Statue of Liberty is a nice misdirect there. That's the one in Vegas, not New York.

Plot theory:

The army has a mega creature buried somewhere in the southwest. Godzilla they tried to kill in the 50's/60's but failed and he went to ground. Now the army's mega creature has woken up and gotten loose. For some reason this draws Godzilla's attention and they come together and fight it out. Meanwhile us puny humans just get in the way.

There are at least 3 creatures in the trailer, 4 if you count the skeleton.

One seems to have large insect legs ending in a single bone talon, some weird glowing effect from it.

Some of the shots out in the bay have a flying creature with forked tail diving around, pulling its wings in to dive, but at one point they seem to be extended, Mothra?

Godzilla himself obviously.

The skeleton seems to be from the 1954 era, if Godzilla has been sleeping, then this thing is one they, or he, managed to kill back in the day?

I'm not sure all of those creatures are the same size as Godzilla. The flying things seemed only about the size of normal aircraft.

Yeah, the one diving into the bay looked to be barely a quarter the size of Godzilla.

Maybe they're experiments, taking the mutated DNA and splicing into generic animals, creating new villains.

Pity, I wouldn't mind seeing an updated badass Mothra.

It could be, hard to tell but the forked tail and possibly leathery hide could be more pterodactyl in design.

That was a very good trailer, made me add it to my list of movies to watch.

Angry Heisenberg vs Godzilla (and potentially multiple creatures), yes please.

My favorite part is that they acknowledge that Godzilla was awakened in 1954. As I've mentioned before, I've been hoping they'd go that route. Virtually every Toho Godzilla movie across seven different continuities has been an overt or implicit sequel to the original film; even if those events are interpreted differently or vary in detail in different continuities, Godzilla's original attack was still in Tokyo in 1954. Even the Emmerich film implies that the Japanese have prior experience with a giant reptile named Gojira. So I feel that for this film to truly be a worthy Godzilla movie, it would have to acknowledge the events of the original. And apparently it is, though it remains to be seen how much it's tweaked the details.

Could the skeleton be the remains of the original Godzilla slain by the Oxygen Destroyer, making this one of the universes with a second Godzilla? The two Kiryu movies also had Godzilla's skeleton survive, though that contradicted the original film.

There was an early draft of the script that got leaked, which incidentally this trailer confirms some of the information that was leaked to be true, that delved deeper into the skeleton found.

It's impressive, but it does sound a bit drawn out. The problem isn't necessarily the length, but how stretched the middle section is with little or no variation.

Agreed. it almost sounds like a musical note there for a bit.

Yeah, they stretched it out to make it match the trailer music, the teaser trailer roar I assume is still the correct one.

And yup, sequel to the 1954 film pretending apparently the nearly 30 inbetween don't exist. Not a bad thing in some cases.

And it's been done six times before. Like I said, there have been seven distinct Godzilla continuities in the course of the Toho franchise, and each time a new continuity came along, it disregarded everything since the original film -- well, except for the last three Toho films, which acknowledged a few other non-Godzilla kaiju films from the '50s and '60s. So basically there's a whole Godzilla multiverse with multiple different branches extending out from a common origin point -- not exactly divergent timelines, though, since several of them reinterpret the meaning and backstory of the original 1954 attack as well as its aftermath. But some version of the events of the '54 film happened in just about every one.

Not tests,
they were trying to kill it.

That's gonna' be one of the most remembered lines from this movie!

What a twist! The traditional motif has been that the (in)famous Bikini atoll blasts either "awakened" a dormant creature or the radiation mutated an existing one. But this line implies something far more horrifying...

They dropped %^&#ing atomic bombs onto a monster to kill it...and they didn't stop it!

Sincerely,

Bill
