Gods of Egypt Pre-release thread

Cool that they're doing a movie about Egyptian gods, something different than usual Greek stuff.

But yeah, looks a like a might-catch-it-on-netflix kinda movie.

Saw it today and enjoyed it. The mostly white cast was distracting at the beginning, but after awhile you just go with it. It was a refreshing change from the usual Greek gods films and embraced some of the more outlandish elements more than any other myth based film I can think of. Basically it was on par with pretty much every mythology film ever made. The story is okay, the acting is done well enough and the FX were pretty solid with some truly gorgeous imagery. It was a good way to kill some time, and I'd have no problem watching it again.

I don't know if it was intentional or not, but there's a scene near the beginning where the main character, a thief, trips a guy and then steals a ring from him to give to his girl. In the silent version of "The Thief Of Bagdad", the main character, a thief, trips a guy and steals his ring, but keeps it. Again, don't know if it was a homage, but it did remind of that earlier film and that kind of set my expectations, which the film delivered on. Both movies have massive set pieces of impressive scale. Both are purely escapist entertainment with plenty of spectacle, thrills, and romance. And both have a lot of white people in the biggest roles, though I'm more forgiving of "The Thief Of Bagdad" due to the time it was made in, whereas "Gods Of Egypt" has no excuse for that.

Basically, if you enjoyed the recent "Clash Of The Titans" well enough, you'll probably enjoy this film as well. Neither are great films by any means, but I found "Gods Of Egypt" much more enjoyable than "Clash Of The Titans" and it certainly had the better visuals. Like Proyas' "Dark City", I do think this movie will fare much better on cable and home video as it will be one of those films that people realize really isn't all that different from most of the blockbusters out there. Frankly most of them are pretty mediocre, and this one isn't any worse.

I actually did enjoy this movie. If you can forgive the whitewashing and the general goofiness and some shoddy CGI, it's pretty entertaining. I'd compare it to The Mummy in that it's very cartoonish but also has dark moments. Some really interesting visuals and ideas in it. I loved the depiction of a flat earth and a sun being dragged by a chariot.

Any depiction of "cat" goddesses like Bast or Sekmet?

Given my avatar, you knew I had to ask.

Don't recall, but I wouldn't be surprised if one was in the background. The gods have multiple forms, a human one, and the animal-hyprid one you see in the poster. I don't remember how they explained that form, but it's very much a part of them beyond "armor", like a godly form. Most walk around looking like humans (although they're about 10 feet tall and their blood is gold. Like actual gold, not just gold colored) but a few retain the hybrid form. Annubis always has the dog head, there's a bull guy (can't remember his name) that's always in bull form.

So, not a major player, then. At most, just a fleeting background extra. Well, nuts.

Sincerely,

Bill
