GOD..ooops..SHATNER

William Shatner will be turning 77 years old in a couple weeks. Yeah, I know it irks some of you that he has lived this long, and is still the biggest star of Star Trek(s). But I have to give the guy props. He has had an incredible career. From the pre-TREK years, to TOS, to the lost decade of the 70s, the TREK movie era, TJ HOOKER and Rescue 911 and his classic quote "GET A LIFE", to TekWar, Price Line, HAS BEEN and Denny Crane.

As for me personally? Several years ago I got to meet Bill Shater at his horse show. My niece is a 'special person' and I decided to take her to the show and camp he would have for the kids. You hear all these horror stories about him, but I ended up meeting him and he was very nice, and very respectful to my niece. We talked for about 10 minutes and it led to our having dinner with him at his home two days later. The guy can cook by the way! When I ribbed him about people believing he had a God-concept in his own mind he just laughed, and changed the subject so fast, I got dizzy. In essence? He didn't deny it. But it was okay. He lived up to hype. He is what he is.

So..my hat is off to you Mr. Shatner. You have taken us along on your ride through life. I have enjoyed you in your good years, and your not so good years. You took the role of a lifetime and became an icon to millions. Keep TREKKIN!

Robert

Great story! I'm so envious that you got to know him. I agree 100% that whatever his flaws, Shatner has left us a remarkable legacy.

Thanks..and I admit that he isn't perfect. I think his actions during TOS were a bit over the top. But I am glad Koenig came around years later. He was Shatner's biggest attacker until the two of them settled their differences. I overheard Koenig talking with a fan right here in San Diego at ComicCon. He said that Shatner, at the time of TOS, knew his career was going to make it or break it based on that show. And so because of that, he did all he could, in his mind, to make it better. Koenig was young at the time, and wasn't a star, and took some of Shatner's antics hard. But he, Koenig, has come to terms with it and now understand's Shatner's behavior, even if he didn't like it.

My wife cant STAND Kirk, she is a Sisko girl. She thinks Shatner's kirk is just a womanzing bastard of a guy. I have to keep reminding her that Kirk wasn't married. I don't consider a guy who has mulitple sexual conquests a 'womanizer'. I do consider them as such IF they are married and still carousing about. She does like him on Boston Legal, which is bizzar. Because Denny Crane is far more of a horn-dog than kirk.

Jimmy, Nichelle and George will all go to their graves (1 out of 3 so far) hating Shatner I guess. But, who really cares?

IIRC, Nicole finally buried the hatchet with Bill when he was doing his "Star Trek Memories" books. She hammered him hard about his behavior towards the cast and it shocked him so much that he went out of his WAY to right the wrongs that others perceived he did. George came around a little later, culminating in the Comedy Central Shatner "Roast", effectively becoming friends again. It was really only Jimmy that went to his grave without having anything more to do with Bill. IIRC, that was the reason why he wasn't in the Futurama episode that had all the original actors voicing their roles (except De Kelley, of course).

So, the long and short of it, things are no where near as bad between them as it used to be.

And yes. Shatner is God!

LOVE that guy!

Apparently you're confusing "womanizer" with "adulterer." One can be a womanizer and be single. In fact, most womanizers are, in my experience.

I read somewhere that Shatner & Doohan patched things up some years ago. When they made an appearance together (at the end of Doohan's life when he was not feeling well), Shatner was the one escorting him around.

It was the TVLand awards. Shatner was very solicitous of the ailing Doohan then, stayed right by his side.

Wasn't aware of that. Thanks for posting that - I'm glad to hear they managed to work out their differences before Jimmy passed.

It's nice to hear a positive story about Shatner for a change. I've always respected the way he could laugh at himself. He always had a good morality, and was always involved with human and ecological causes. As far as I'm concerned - flaws and all - he's a good role-model. He's proof that we're all human.
Thanks for sharing.

A few years ago, I remember hearing this one story about the shock jock Mancow Muller and Shatner. Me being from Chicago, it was highlighted in the local media. I'm not a fan of Mancow by any means, but I thought it was a good story.

Muller and Shatner are buddies. They've gone paintballing so much that they've established Paintball fundraisers for charities. Anyway, Muller was about to get married, and he invited Shatner to attend the festitivies. However, Shatner was in Europe for a project (what that project was, I don't know). So Shatner told Muller that he had to miss the wedding.

However, he couldn't leave his buddy hanging. He flew from Europe to Chicago straight and made it in time for the wedding reception. He flew halfway across the world so that he could dance with the bride and entertain guests! And then, when the party ended, he went back to the airport and promptly returned to Europe!

What energy and heart. He gets props from me for that feat.

Robert, good story about Shatner. He is the shining star of all of Trek. He was born to play that role and no one played the Enterprise Captain better.

God Bless your niece too. Special kids are angels.

Happy Birthday Captain Kirk! Rock on!

Another good story. Thanks for that.

However, I identify wit the way the characters interacted, not as much as how the actors did. That being the case, I'm glad he patched things up with most of them.

The thing that made TOS the best was the character interaction. You know that whole loyalty, honor and friendship thing that TNG loves to use? Where do you think they got that from?

My wife, who cannot stand Trek of any kind, asks me what it is that makes me love it so much, TOS in particular. I tell her it's all about the friendship displayed between those characters. No other show before or since can touch TOS in this regard.

I can't qoute the source, but I read somewhere that health issues precluded James Doohan particiapting in the Futurama episode.

^^^ In the recent light of hearing that they both mended their friendship, then is likely more the case. It would certainly make sense.
