CODA is one of my favorite VOY episodes. Janeway battles with Death--and wins! It also has one of my favorite Janewayisms, the title of this thread.

It has, for me, the most frightening and (arguably) the most moving scenes in VOY: the Doc's killing of Janeway in sickbay, and the memorial scene, especially the moment when Janeway cant keep from crying during Harry's speech abt the time they were eating overripe fruit and Janeway said, "These are the moments to remember."

Len Cariou is quite chilling as the Father-impersonating alien. What a chilling line when he says that one day Janeway will end up in his matrix, "and you will nourish me for a long, long time."

"Go back to hell--coward!" Sigh. I love my Janeway.

I agree that "Coda" is scary and exciting and I also agree about the memorial scene as very touching and the scene where The Doctor kills Janeway as a very scary one.

The only thing I don't like is the end scenes where Braga just have to sneak in his atheist propaganda, in this time how futile it is to expect some sort of afterlife. They could have spared us from that, maybe revealing the whole event as some "close to death" thing, more like the one Picard had in the TNG episode "Tapestry".

However, Janeway's comment to the creature at the end is still good!

You know, the one thing that really bothered me about that scene was that there only seemed to be 12-15 people there-- at the Captain's funeral? Otherwise, I enjoy the episode (although the thought of aliens waiting to trick you when you die... a little creepy).

The only thing I don't like is the end scenes where Braga just have to sneak in his atheist propaganda, in this time how futile it is to expect some sort of afterlife.

I liked that tidbit myself.
I'm personally quite fed up with less than subtle suggestions of religious opinions that the afterlife exists.

Yeah that coward line was great - I wonder if it was scripted or she (mulgrew) threw that in.

I thought this was a great episode, especially the ending.

As if Death has any chance against Kathryn Janeway.

I loved this episode. I thought it was a great way to remind everyone of the strong ties Janeway held for her crew. I also thought it threw an interesting wrench into the relationship between Janeway and Chakotay.

Everything that happened between the first time the shuttle went down and when they finally woke Janeway up was all in her mind. So, the scenes where we see her die in Chakotay's arms are all episodes created in Janeway's mind. I found it very interesting that her mind had Chakotay crying and reacting like he did.

I also found it very interesting that Janeway refused death. It was nice to see how much she was willing to fight to make sure her crew made it home... very dedicated. That is one of the things I always loved about this character. No matter the personal sacrifice, she did what she thought was best for her crew.

I too liked this episode and Mulgrew's performance. Of course anytime Mulgrew is the star of an episode, I enjoy her performance (especially some of the questionable ones like Macrocism (Sp?) ) but it was great here.

Coda is also one of my most favorite episodes. I LOVED the scene where Chakotay was crying over Janeway's possible death..I cried as well..cause my baby was crying..*sigh* Anyway, one of Mulgrew's best performances was when she told the alien to go back to hell-coward. I just adored this episode and will watch it again later. I also loved the scene where she was crying over Harry saying that "these are the times we have to remember". VERY TOUCHING!

I always took it that it was all in her head after that first time. I understand that it was flashing back and forth between the 'real world' and the 'world in her head'. This first time someone brought up this perspective, I too, was surprised. I'd always just assumed what we saw was how it was happening. But this way makes perfect sense as well. Chakotay crying over her, B'Elanna and Harry with their tear-inducing eulogies... Yeah. Either perspective works.

I guess I'll have to disagree. I didn't care for this episode when it first aired and I've rewatched it every so often to give it a chance and I still find it to be a mess. This episode started off intriguingly enough as we were left to try to make sense of what was going on but then it became a pretty pedestrian meditation on the afterlife and the impact of a character's death on those around them.

Frankly I enjoyed the TNG episodes this one hour was modeled on--The Next Phase, Cause and Effect and Tapestry. This episode just didn't work and it was one of the episodes that really contributed to a really mediocre third season. Jeri Taylor might be a great lady but her tenure as showrunner was very disappointing.

It's the call of nature people and Janeway thought she was beyond the call of nature.

7 years and no end of that constipated expression.

For little things like that(like in Basics where it looks there are only like 30 crew members)- I just like to pretend that there are 200 more people we can't see. :-)

Yea, I like this episode, mostly for the intrigue of "what the heck is going on???"

I tend to agree with Akiraprise. But I'll add my two cents-I loved Coda. Very emotional, and it really shows the ties Janeway has with her crew. Epic episode.

I just take that scene as it was a more intimate, private affair for Officers and others that had actually worked with Janeway on a daily basis and that another memorial service had been done for the entire crew at another time.

Then again, if you ascribe to the notion that those scenes were all in Janeway's imagination, it would make sense she would see only the people she'd worked with one-to-one.
