No it made perfect sense. Ray is one of those people who genuinely like old movies and facts and history and old movie history and he would have gotten onto a Dustin Hoffman kick via some gateway Hoffman movie when young and then pursued him and watched the classics. He's a real person, not a hipster, as in he is really interested in history and wider contexts not just skimming the surface for names to drop.

I assume you mean Shoshanna? Was that the one who didn't know the Graduate? That makes sense because she is exactly the opposite of Ray in all those things and not a curious person.

Yes, Ray likes old movies, and any one of any age can like explore and pile into the old classics. The Graduate came out 8 years before I was born, so it's kinda disingenuous to suggest that I was there on opening night... Franz didn't have a dumb blank look, there was no sign that he didn't understand the reference, but do you notice how often that that happens in TV that young fictional characters profess to have an acceptable hole in their general knowledge that is only acceptable because they are young, even though there are a million tv stations in America rerunning everything and Youtube that they should know who Balki and Cousin Larry are?

I'm glad Franz didn't go "huh" but the fucker is almost thirty so there is no way he could have gone "huh" unless he's one of those hippies who doesn't own a TV.

Hannah would never fuck a man who did not... okay, I keep forgetting how unimportant physical TVs are to millennials, she would be impressed with someone who did not have a TV so long as he knew everything that he was supposed to have known about what's on TV that she also knows from watching on TV.

If Hannah is a reader, why do we never see her reading?

Did she even ever throw a book at someone?!! She fails at being portrayed as a reader. Maybe she just reads about reading on her laptop to get enough names and allusions to be able to speak to her peers.

I think we need a poll as to how many people who are 30 something have seen the Graduate and whether they saw it because they were lying on the couch and it happened to be on one day or whether they saw it because it was a classic.
