Giacchino off(?)

Giacchino's name has been removed from IMDB.com; 98% of the time, I find, that because the composer is no longer working on the film.
And there is no mention on his site, and appearently the studio is saying they have no hired a composer. Probably news to Giacchino who has been writing it.

So, I'm gonna guess MG is out at this point. Unless we got any fancy inside sources here.

It's not like there was any pressure on the guy to produce better music than Jerry Goldsmith or anything, oh, wait..

I'd be interested to see this corraborated... to me the music is one of the more important factors to my enjoyment of a film... and I'd never heard of Michael Giacchino before Trek got underway. I guess he's worked for Abrams before but since I've not been a fan of Abrams' previous work I haven't been exposed to MG's style.

I am in the camp that wants to hear a great new score, but one including lots of TOS music cues... lots of audio touchstones.

Seen The Incredibles? That's Giacchino. He's a great composer, that was a particularly memorable sixties-esque score.

his name has not been 'removed' it just wasnt there. It wasnt there when he recently talked to scifi wire about how he plans on approaching the score. As far as I know he is still on the movie. Bear in mind that IMDB is not always accurate...and of course before a movie comes out it is even less so. the trek 2008 is no exception

Oh yeah? I just re-watched The Incredibles and that was good music... exciting and appropriate to the action and at the same time a stylistic homage to the era the film parodies/portrays.

Now I'm bummed to think I may never hear his vision of Trek music.

I actually attempted to add Mr. Giachinno to the imdb entry when the news broke... oh, months ago. Back when PowderedToastMan's site's top story (incidentally, if you haven't bookmarked TrekMovie.com yet, you're nuts) was how sucky the imdb entry was. Though some of the problems were fixed, the imdb never acted on my attempt nor anyone else's.

So, basically... don't trust the imdb on Star Trek. They're almost certain to be several months to several years behind on the news because of their restrictive editing policies. The Wikipedia article used to be pretty accurate, though... I haven't checked it for a while, but I'd assume it's still fairly solid.

I've checked Wikipedia. It does list Giacchino as the composer, and lists Star Trek's score as one of his upcoming compositions. There's also some guy who is a music producer, I am unsure what, if any, role he plays.

His work on "The Incredibles" actually made me excited to think what he may do for "Star Trek".

I think Giacchino was one of the first names thrown out there as hired for the movie, wasn't he? Which means Abrams must've wanted to sew him up pretty quickly.
I'd think if he were out, it'd have been a mainstream media story. So, I doubt his exclusion from IMDB means anything.
For what it's worth, my number two and three choices were James Horner (TWOK: BEST TREK SCORE EVER!) and Danny Elfman (kinda out of left field, but it'd be interesting to see how he'd have approached Trek). Just a heads up for Mr. Abrams if he does have to shop around for a new composer. ;)

Danny Elfman might have been an interesting change (as would Hans Zimmer or Howard Shore), but I'm glad they didn't call in Horner. He's made his musical mark on Trek, and judging from the rest of his ouevre he'd just repeat it.

Michael Giacchino is an excellent choice. It is the one selection I am unashamedly optimistic about. :)

Yes, Giacchino's name dates back to some of the earliest casting rumors (Philip Seymour Hoffman as the ship's doctor, anyone? :p). His prior work with Abrams (M:i:III, Lost, Alias) made him a virtual shoo-in.

Neither Elfman nor Horner does much for me - Horner is too derivative and not terribly clever, and Elfman is repetitious.

I'd like to hear a very modern, different score incorporating one or two themes from the TV series.

Giacchino is Abrams' regular composer (like how John Williams is Spielberg's)

As well as The Incredibles, he did a lot of videogame scores, including a downright astonishing cinematic score for Medal Of Honor Frontline, which you can find on MP3s around the net...
