GhostBusters 3 is Finally Being Made. (2020 Release)

I just watched GB2 again. I noticed this before but it really stood out to me this time - Peter and Dana have a real relationship which is almost completely separate from anything happening in terms of plot. In the first film he is hitting on her constantly... even though she is way, way, out of his league. There is a new documentary about the first movie and that is discussed. Obviously by the time of the sequel they have real history. Even though Venkman is doing his usual goofy antics he clearly cares about Dana and her baby. Real chemistry between Bill and Sigourney. Where in the first she was more slightly amused and irritated with him. Actual character development. Which is an unexpected highlight in what is really a comedy.

And that underlying question about Oscar’s parentage, that by the time Venkman catches the baby at the end, doesn’t matter. In any other film, that desperate act when he’s trying to protect Oscar even though he’s basically bound up and in pain would get more attention. But it’s nicely understated, and his ‘humour defence mechanism’ is being used to defend Oscar. It is a very very underrated film from a character perspective.

I suspect the unjust criticisms of similarities between the two movies is largely because Dana Barrett is the center of both supernatural events. But really they would have been crazy not to make full use of Sigourney Weaver. Who was a full movie star in her own right. In a part that originally going to be less important.

In that same documentary, Ramis and Reitman said they were surprised she wanted to do the first movie. No real experience in movies with comedy. Also that Dana being possessed was not in the original script at all. Totally Sigourney idea to add that.

Which is remarkable because without it and played by someone else Dana would have easily been another forgettable 80s movie girlfriend. It’s great that the sequel brought her back in a real role. So easy to envision a studio wanting to give Peter a new girlfriend like he was James Bond or Batman.

First, OMG are most of you *young*! I was 16 when the original movie came out.

Hubby said last night he wants to see this (and Eternals) in theaters, so yay! Now we just have to schedule it.
I often wonder the ages around here. Depending on the subject discussed I either feel much older or much younger than everyone else. I was 6 when the first came out. Did not see it the theater. A friend of my Dad was big into modern technology. Had the first home computer I ever saw. Also had a satellite dish. Taped a lot of movies and shared with us before we had cable. I remember our babysitter watching Ghostbusters at our house because his parents would not let him. My Mom would gripe about us seeing inappropriate stuff but allow it because my Dad did not seem to care.

Temple of Doom also came out in 1984. Saw that on Pay Per View while Mom was out. That left an impression. My Brother and sister are even younger than I am.

I figure Dana's direct exposure to so much supernatural energy painted a target on her back. Shame they didn't mention that as a possible cause in the movie.
There is a deleted scene on the Blu Ray that acknowledged it but not exactly in that way. I would have to rewatch it. It shows the four guys actually examining the route Oscar’s baby carriage took through the street and Dana’s distress of being involved in something like this again. Egon and/or Ray have some type of reply... but drawing a blank on what it was.

^By that logic though, wouldn't Lois be equally a target?

IIRC it was going to be a plot point in the 2009 video game that Dana was a descendant of Shandor and that's what made her such a spook magnet. Unfortunately Weaver declined to sign onto the project, so they just invented a new character and made her a Shandor scion instead.

Indeed he would, but Dana was the one with the baby Vigo needed. If she hadn't had a kid some other lady with a baby who had elevated spiritual energy would have been targeted.

It comes down to the fact she works at the museum too. Mind you, the video game helps tie stuff together by having shandor’s cult be basically responsible for the slime generation I think.

I saw GB2 in theaters, but we arrived right before it started so we got to sit in the first two rows. Screen from one side of my vision to the other. Had both a headache and a neckache from staring and not moving my head.

Yeah, a major part of the game is investigating the city-wide mechanism meant to summon Gozer, and the rivers of slime (generated by an imprisoned baby sloar IIRC) is what powers the whole thing. The museum is just one of many "nodes" across the city, so it wasn't so much that Vigo was controlling the slime, it's that by chance his possessed painting was placed right at a confluence of psychic turbulence that basically awoke him.

I'd forgotten the plot of the game, that's actually quite an elegant way to tie everything together.

I loved the game, and not just as a game, but with the way it actually added to the GB in general.

Yep, curious to see if it is still considered cannon with the new movie...
Though the ejector seat is from the Extreme Ghostbusters cartoon IIRC...

I did pick up this last week:

In the 80s (maybe before and definitely after--see "Superman Returns") it was a trope that had been overused by the time GB 2 came out, was overused in sequels. The romantic couple from the first movie have had a relationship but it didn't last and, now in the sequel, they rediscover their feelings for each other.

I remember watching this movie in the cinema and turning to my friend within the first half hour of the film to make a joke about Peter and Dana's relationship--and how the movie would end.

Aside from Rmancing The Stone/Jewel In The Nile, I am hard pressed to think of any.

Hard to find on an internet search but I remember my friend and I making jokes about it during the movie to the point where we were told to be quiet.

Same here. I guess it depends on the genre we are talking about. Generally 80s sequels did not have returning love interests at all. Why I used the Bond girl example.

Romantic Comedies??? How many ever get sequels? Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile are a rare exception for an action, adventure franchise because the two leads are male and female love interests.
