GhostBusters 3 is Finally Being Made. (2020 Release)

Whether we need or don't need it's not up to us. Sony wants it.
If we had one great movie I'd be happy with that. But look at the era we're in.

Ok, let me rephrase that. I'd much rather have one great movie to come of it. I don't think GB is something that warrants a load of movies. It's all about quality vs quantity.

Four movies in 40 years is hardly what I'd call a deluge...
Owain isn't saying that. He's saying he doesn't want to see it become that if we do indeed up getting a lot more films like Reitman wants.

I think the idea of expanding the scope of the series has potential if handled correctly with the right writers and directors. No longer focused on the original team but instead seeing how the paranormal presents itself across the globe in different manners.

And you'd be right. I'm responding to Afterlife possibly spawning others via different directors. I just don't see the attraction. Basically, I'm all for international in-universe franchises set in different locations, but they would have to be careful with it, because it just feels like something that could easily burn out.

Right, that's exactly what I mean. We have 4 movies now, and that's just fine. I just don't see it much as an ongoing series.

It's nothing new. They created the whole "Ghost Corps" thing to make a GB cinematic universe in 2015 with the last movie.

Every studio wants its own MCU and they're gonna try their damnedest to make one.

Eh. They'll fuck it up, or they won't. Either way I think it's a little early to worry about over saturation in a franchise that is literally only just starting to stir again after decades of mostly nothing. At this point, more Ghostbusters is far better than no Ghostbusters.

Don't forget that Aykroyd's original script was *bonkers* in terms of scope. The basic concept has a lot of potential so long as one doesn't limit the concept to "80's comedy business start-up movie" as the framing device.

Well, it's also way too early for them to start talking doing more when they haven't yet seen any success of this one. Just seems like they might be jumping the gun is all.

But they're not talking about it, are they? They're talking about what they hope will come of it. There's a difference between plans and aspirations, and there's no such thing as premature aspirations. That's kinda the whole point, no?

I think the animated series proves that there is a lot of cool stuff they could do. I wouldn't mind one or two more movies. What I don't want to see are needless spin offs. I'd like them to keep to the core concept of four ghostbusters that are tied to the originals.

Yeah, see, that's what I mean. One or two more? Yeah, I'd find that acceptable. And IMHO, I just feel that the Ghostbusters work best precisely because we haven't had many of them. That's part of the appeal for me anyway.

Don't forget the Mr. Stay Puff origin story which has two sequels already built in. The first film will explore why Mr. Stay Puff wanted to become a sailor and will end on a tease for the next movie which will be Stay Puff Vs. Murray the Mantis.
Then we tease Drool the Dog-faced Goblin and set up the streaming series.

A canon series set between 2 and Afterlife. That's 32 years of history. You can even get a voice actor to play Egon in his later years.

To go back to the idea of spin-offs, the IDW comics eventually had the GB become a franchise with multiple teams in multiple cities. I don't see why they couldn't do the same thing with movies or TV/streaming series.

Having various teams of comedians be the Ghostbusters in different cities is a natural for new movies. Sort of like the News Team Battle in Anchorman.

Or dust off Aykroyd's old bonkers draft set in a future world where ghosts are as common a pest as roaches, and make THAT into a show (animated or live action, either is doable!)

Here's the thing about Ghostbusters; it's strength is in the concept, not the lore and continuity. You can tell all sorts of ghostbusters stories without having to turn it into some interconnected MCU style franchise. Hell, you could do a quasi- steam punk take on Ghostbusters set in the 1920's dealing with Shandor's cult, and it could just be entirely it's own thing.

Fretting about the possibility of a Mr Stay Puft origin movie, or a 'Pete, Ray & Egon: The College Years' is just dumb and short sighted.
