Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

On the basis of the trailer I wouldn't pay money to watch at the cinema but I would watch it on streaming.

I liked the visuals, and it even felt good seeing that world again even if I'm not completely won over by everything else. I liked what they were trying to achieve with this movie, and the actors didn't feel out of place, I'll miss that firehouse as HQ though.

I hope the movie is funnier than the trailer. It very well may be, it can be difficult to make a funny trailer when you lose so much context for the jokes. But I didn't laugh once at this.

Kristen Wiig can do no wrong with me. McCarthy is hit and miss (and didn't give too much in the trailer for a real showing). McKinnon looks like she'll be a hoot. But as someone who still watches SNL, I can't stand Leslie Jones and her "I'm angry and so I scream everything!" style of comedy, which she's bringing in full force to the movie.

And a little bit too much of a been there, done that (but funnier) with this trailer. Starting off with the librarian, getting slimed (though they cut to the chase with that one), arriving then joking about the new car, the black ghostbuster confronted with ghosts in the Subway (like Winston in 2)...

We'll see with the next trailer, as that will hopefully stand on its own.

Just heartbreaking stuff, really. I'm glad the cartoon did more, but that didn't involve or help Ernie Hudson.

To add insult to injury, Hudson auditioned for the role of Winston in The Real Ghostbusters -- the role he'd already originated in the movie -- and nonetheless lost out to Arsenio Hall. That must've been frustrating. (Although I can understand why it happened. Some actors who are very good at on-camera acting aren't that skilled in the rather different discipline of voice acting. Hudson played Cyborg in The Super Powers Team around the same time, and he wasn't very good in that role. He's gotten better at voice acting since, but back then, it doesn't seem to have been one of his strengths.)

(Stay Puft - for the longest time I thought this was a separate entity from Gozer)

In the cartoon, he was. I never really considered the discrepancy there. Although the conceit in the animated series was that the movie was a dramatization of the real Ghostbusters' adventure, so probably some things were changed. Maybe the screenwriters combined Gozer and Sta-Puft into a composite character?

Got to say the trailer didn't work for me. Too many "McCarthy"-isms in and and too many, I'll go with "cliche'd" jokes/characterizations in it. The boisterous black woman, the clumbsy fat woman (or Melissa McCarthy staple character), the unconventional nerd woman. Some of the looks and effects of the ghost almost struck me as cartoon-like, and I dunno, the "logical" person in me asks questions. Like, so, a ghost possesses McCarthy's body and has her do the "Exorcist" 360-head thing.... Regardless if she's possessed or not wouldn't this break McCarthy's neck and, you know, kill her?

There was a couple nice-looking visuals (I liked the early-evening street-level shot of the "new Ecto-1" going through the city) but overall the trailer left me with a "Meh."

But, really, the ghost effects in the original looked much better, the low-level, looking-up, shot of I'm guessing our Stay Puft analog just looked silly.

I've no problem with an all-female cast (though going that route still strikes me as an odd, pandering, choice) or a "reboot" (we were never getting one with the original actors) but I'm just not too excited or pumped to see this. I likely will end up going to see it, and I may-well be surprised, but I can't say this trailer pushed my hopes one way or another.

How is McCarthy's character "clumsy?" There was the one bit where she touched a hot contact on some equipment and burned her finger, but that was it. Otherwise, she seems to be a smart, confident, commanding figure. She's the one doing most of the voiceover, exhorting the others to join forces to make a difference. She's the one who punches a ghost with some kind of proton brass-knuckles thing. She's quite physically menacing in the part where she's possessed and dangles Holtzmann out the window. She doesn't come off as a stereotype at all.

Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver got turned into Terror Dogs, but they came out of it okay. Supernatural forces can do weird things to the human body.

The first part of that sentence would be a lot more convincing if you'd left out everything inside the parentheses.

I was surprised that her character here actually didn't seem to be based her usual style of comedy.

I watched it again, and I am just sold. Sold sold sold. I've already fallen in love with Kate McKinnon's character. :adore:

I'm kind of mixed on the trailer. The humor didn't really seem that good, and the visuals were sort of hit or miss. I'm keeping an open mind though since we haven't really seen much detail yet. And sometimes it takes a second or third trailer to really provide a good hook in my experience.

I think Kate McKinnon is great and should be in everything.

I like the visuals. Effects look slick.

The comedy is a little broad but it's a trailer.

I made the mistake of reading the IMDB board for this film and now I'm really depressed :(

I'm happy a lot of people here are keeping an open mind though. I personally think the trailer looks great and has me really pumped for the film.

Finally got a chance to watch it. Does it look original and new: No.

Does it look like it could be fun and entertaining: Yes!

Just an "atmosphere" I got, I guess. Mostly based on her style of comedy. It seemed toned down in the trailer, but it's hard to shake the notion that that's the comedy around her. The "proton brass knuckles" thing, for me, was dumb.

So was the first one and the ghosts didn't look like cartoons.

Guess it's the levels of how much belief I'm willing to suspend. The ending of the original implies the terror dog forms were shells over Weaver and Moranis. Here, she's possessed and her physical neck is twisted around.

The first part of that sentence would be a lot more convincing if you'd left out everything inside the parentheses.

It's how I feel. It seems like and odd, pandering, choice but there'd nothing strictly wrong with it.

As I said the trailer didn't impress. I remain as "meh" about this as I always was. Maybe a bit less "interested" in it because I saw nothing in it that makes want to see. Broad humor, though-talking, large framed, AA character, corny jokes and corny looking effects: Meh. Effects in final film could be different, the writing? Not so much.

I've already fallen in love with Kate McKinnon's character. :adore:

That's Holtzmann, right? She looks like she's got a lively sense of humor. I wouldn't say there are any exact correspondences between characters, but she might be the Venkman of the team, the cut-up and wiseass, albeit maybe with a bit of Ray's childlike glee (look how delighted she is by the hearse). Although her hairstyle and glasses are evocative of The Real Ghostbusters's Egon.

Well, maybe what you're seeing is filtered through your preconceptions. I've never seen the actress in anything beyond a couple of trailers before (unless you count her Kim Possible voice work, which I don't remember), and I didn't find anything problematical about her in the trailer.

Well, they did in the animated series! ;)

How is it any less "pandering" to have an all-male cast? It's just that people don't recognize pandering when they're the ones being pandered to.
