Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

The first film was good and the second OK but I don't love them so don't feel a lot of attachment; Wiig and especially McCarthy have done some good work but I hated Bridesmaids and haven't seen the other actresses.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

A compound word is by its very definition...a word.
That's right. A compound word is a word. But "chick flick" is not a word; it's two words. Ergo, 'compound word' does not apply in this context. Instead, "chick flick" is a term. Capiche?

Ah!

Therefore, this is a quibble? Correct?

Would you prefer I spell it like this: chick-flick? Or perhaps: chickflick?

However, it's spelled, it can be found listed in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as "chick flick". Therefore, it's a word (not a slang, I might add.)

That is my source, or attribution.

How about you? Have you found evidence to the contrary aside from your own grammatical interpretation?

I think that I'm through with this idiotic tangent to an idiotic tangent, twice-removed from the thread topic, thanks! I'd like to return to discussing Ghostbusters-related material in this thread. :techman:

Translation: You yielded to the logic of the situation.

Good for you.

Saurian brandy, my treat.

I yielded nothing.

If you'd like to continue the discussion with me about aspects of dictionary entries, I suggest that you make a thread in the appropriate forum. I'd suggest Miscellaneous.

Now, really, that is all I have to say on this here.

Chick flick is two words. It's not a compound word. A compound word is homework. To argue otherwise is absolutely ridiculous and shows a complete inability to admit error.

As I always understood it. Compound word is two words jammed together to make one, some argument for a hyphenated word being a compound word but more accurately called a hyphenate, but usually considered one word.

Two separate words not connected either actually or via hyphen? Is two words. A dictionary doesn't strictly give you a list of thing that are singilarly "a word." It can give you the definition of two words commonly used together as a single term. But it's still multiple words.

Perhaps that will be the villain in Ghostbusters: Yeah, we got vaginas! - the spirit of the Grammar Nazi, who haunts people who get their yours/you're/yous and there/their/they're's confused.

I wishes at this point Enrique wishes he were German because German is the mother of all compound word languages.
