Ghost in the Shell (live action film)

Plus, it would be nice to have another female led action franchise (there are more stories, right?) out there with the chance of having some style and message to it
As with a lot of sci-fi, the potential stories are endless.

And I'm all in favor of Tachikomas debating the meaning of existence.

Not too much chatter about this, but I've got to say it looks like it's going to be pretty great.

Visually it just looks fantastic, love the feel of it.

I think it looks fantastic. Having watched the series and the movie, I think they did a good job bringing it to the big screen. The look, the feel, the pacing, all pretty much faithful. I think SarJo looks just like The Major from the animated form. I'm looking forward to seeing this one in the Theaters, possibly more than once.

Q2

This looks really interesting or another Jupiter Acsending. I never saw JA because of the reviews but I'm hoping this film gets a positive reaction. Might be worth checking out, maybe even in 3D.

The reviews are going to have to be strong for this one to get me to the cinema I think.

Having just watched the 1995 anime for the first time last week I can say my excitement level is at the 5%. The anime, as a whole, was pretty dull and filled to the brim with all the things that generally put me off the medium. Still, it was beautiful to look at and the music was very interesting.

Hugo - There's nothing sadder than a puppet without a ghost, especially the kind with red blood running through them.

Seems like a reflection of the feelings of the lack of accountability of the modern day Japanese bureaucracy. Of course in the fictional universe they are not even the worst, you have Goda in 2nd Gig, some of the other Sections assassinating people domestically totally without oversight and the prefecturl police being involved in false flag attacks using the Laughing Man

Copy and paste from my comments in the other thread.

Saw it today -- the tone is pretty faithful to the 1995 anime with a little SAC mixed in -- although the credits only mention the comic, by which, I assume the mean the manga. The story is more comprehensible than the anime. The worries I had about the depiction of Aramaki and Togusa were dispelled. I would have like to have seen more scenes about the Major exploring her identity. As the running time is 107 minutes, perhaps some of that stuff got cut. The music is ok, perhaps too much electronic and not enough oriental, although I was happy to hear some of Kenji Kawai's work included. I'd rate it a solid B+ as it lost some of the philosophy, beauty and reflective stillness of the anime. I doubt that seeing it in 3D would add much to the experience apart from possibly giving me a headache.

Also to add, some of the visuals of the cityscape with the large holographic images were way too busy and distracting IMO. They could have dialled those way back from 11. Also someone should tell the vehicle designer that helicopter rotors don't work very well if large fixed wings are placed immediately below them. They should have used the tilt-rotor designs of the anime.

I would recommend not seeing the original anime first as it will spoil the movie slightly -- although I do rate the anime more highly. Some of the beats are very similar although the overall story diverges.

If memory serves, I think they were partly basing that design on a vehicle from Innocence.
Possibly so. Anyway, it's no big deal.

ETA: I checked the vehicle design in Innocence -- it's a tilt-rotor with an advanced variable wing geometry -- each wing mounts an engine with counter rotating props. There is no main rotor attached to the fuselage. It seems like a more aesthetic design than the version in this movie but it's not important enough to get bothered about.

I found it deeply profound, and deeply sorrowful.
Worthy of a sequel though? I was one of only two people in the first screening early yesterday afternoon so to say it wasn't packed would be an understatement. I doubt the box office takings will be sufficient but my sample size is very small.

I think Innocence could make a great live-action film although they borrowed some of the scenes from it for this film. The Laughing Man story might also make an interesting film if it was adapted to parallel some current events such as Wikileaks, electoral manipulation, fake news, etc. Anyway -- I doubt either will get made... There's also Solid State Society, Individual 11 (minus Kuze) and other stories, of course.

ETA: Amended Individual 11 comment.

I was hoping for the "Laughing Man" story if a sequel gets the green light as it is, imo, the best arc GITS has to offer. And isn't the current film slightly based on the "Individual 11" arc? I thought Kuze was the films antagonist.

I saw it today, and while the critics' reviews weren't so great, I fairly liked the movie. I didn't see the original animated film. The plot was mediocre, but it was a visual feast, and having read the reviews, I didn't expect anything extraordinary from it. I'm also a fan of Scarlett Johansson, and this was another kick-ass lead role for her. I give it a B.

Yeah, the Individual 11 story in SAC has a lot more depth, of course. The anime wasn't afraid to demand the undivided attention and concentration of the audience.
