As we moved to Florida from up north, we naturally purged ourselves of lots of old crap that we'd collected over the years. At that time, though, I kept all of the many tapes I'd made off-air of VOYAGER, and ENTERPRISE. I'd already completed TOS, TNG, and DS9 on DVD. Naturally, at two-episodes-per-tape, that added up to a sizable collection.
One by one, we managed to purchase DVDs of these shows as availability and finances permitted. As I recall, when we were in the process of moving in 2010, we were gradually adding VOYAGER season sets to our collection and had gotten a fake-Chinese set from eBay, but it all got resolved. Lots of videotapes graduated to the rubbish.
Then along came Blu-rays. First, I got the TOS set and then, as seasons were released, I got the TNG Blu-rays - great upgrades both! DS9 and VOYAGER are stuck in SD, so there's no further upgrades there.
ENTERPRISE however remained the poor stepchild of STAR TREK in our house. We watched the series as it aired, always in letterbox SD, and enjoyed some of the episodes, but it never really became a favorite. The DVDs were ridiculously expensive and I never felt the urge to pursue them at that price. Same with the Blu-rays, the pricing was always outrageous for a show that we only passively liked.
A year or so ago, a TV purchase gave us streaming capabilities and we watched the whole series of ENTERPRISE again in some sort of HD. It was better than we'd remembered, and the idea of adding official versions to the collection became more appealing.
Now, in a desire to finally rid ourselves of a ton of VHS tapes, we've taken the plunge and ordered the Blu-ray set of ENTERPRISE. At around $123 on Amazon, it became worth it to rid ourselves of the VHS tapes.
So sometime in the near future, we'll be launching ENTERPRISE again at home on Blu-ray.
