Getting burned out on a series

I stopped reading Star Wars years ago and I discovered a few months ago that I just don`t have the passion for Star Trek books I used to have any more.
I am still very much a New Frontier fan but all the other series lost a lot of their appeal to me. I probably just need a break and this is what I am doing.

Close to where I'm at, as well. I can't say I've ever burned out on a series from frequency alone; I've gone stretches of reading a half-dozen Trek books in a row, and a few summers ago did a marathon re-reading of the NJO. Typically, if anything kills a series for me, it's content--and yes, I suppose 'growing dislike of the main character' is applicable here too. Of course, it should be said that with regards to the Trek book line over the last decade, or even within series like the S.C.E., it used to be there was such internal diversity that it was just as good as reading from another series/genre in terms of changing up ideas. Also, I do so much reading for school that regardless how long I spent on any one series in terms of pleasure reading, it's always different from what I'm reading for my day job(s).

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

I don't want to get burned out, so this is why I switch between Star Trek, Star Wars and other books I find. I read Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series one after after another, and I got to book 21, 2nd from the end, and just couldn't do it, so I put it down and never went back. As a result I switch between series. After I finish the Star Wars book I'm on, I'm going to read the new Voyager book "Unworthy" by Kirsten Beyer and then I think it's off to some historical novels I've got collecting dust.

I'd say the maximum number of books I can read in one series before needing a break is 7. And that because I particularly wanted to get through a favorite series before the long awaited eigth book came out. Don't think I could do it again.

Honestly, I was briefly burned out on trek books for a few months just recently. I had a growing "to read' stack that included The Never-Ending Sacrifice, Full Circle, The Romulan War, Synthesis and Precipice. During this time I picked up and dropped Full Circle and Synthesis without finishing them (something I rarely do).

I just got back into reading Trek again about a week or so ago and have burned through Romulan War and Precipice, and am currently in the middle of my second attempt on Synthesis.

Usually the only way I get burned out, is if i've read a certain set of books so many times. I couldn't tell you how many times I'd read the old TNG numbered books. Now I have all these old TOS books I've never read before. It's all new to me. So far I've burned through "The Covenant of the Crown", "The Prometheus Design" and "The Abode of Life"

I've kind of lost interest or zeal for the Trek books this past couple of weeks. I still have a handful of noteworthy books, Troublesome Minds, Precipice, Sarek, Once Burned, and Vendetta. (I know. They all rock, right?) I'm sure I'll crack open Precipice in the next couple of weeks.

I've read them once each. There's way too many books I haven't read to spend time rereading much of anything. I'd like to reread some books, sure (Ellroy's LA Quartet, Wolfe's Book of the New Sun, Peake's Gormenghast, to name a few), but I have literally hundreds of unread books. Hell, I bought three more books today.

If all I had to read was Star Trek and Star Wars books, I'd go nuts.

I got burned out on the "A Time to.." series but that was really just a follow on from my being burned out on the TNG crew. Oh and some pretty mediocre books I felt required to wade through in the middle of it.

If I was in that position again, wading through dullness to get to an end gem (KRAD in that case) I would actually just skip around. Stuff gets over recapped anyway. I might turn back or I might not.

I have all the Titan series and I haven't read a single one yet! I am SO tempted to just start with the Swallow book because his Terok Nor book is my all time favorite piece of Treklit. Someone.. tell me I shouldn't do this.

All the time, and usually with Star Trek. After 3 or 4 in a row I just need a break. I'll pick up something from another series for a while then go back to Trek. And if it's science fiction in general I've had too much of, I switch over to Nora Roberts for at least one book, or several if I happen to be reading part of a series.

Ok, I lied. I got to thinking last night after I finished "Shield of Lies" that I only have one book left in this three book series and that I should just read the third book...and so I am. I also couldn't wait to see what happens. Besides, I did read anything for almost 4 months, when I picked up "Shield of Lies." After this one I'm definately going to pick up "Unworthy" then head off into the realm of the historical novels.

You really shouldn't. You'll end up mightily confused about who's who on that ship.

^If that's a concern, Over a Torrent Sea (the previous TTN novel, by yours truly) has a crew roster in the back (though it only includes the characters featured in OaTS itself). The Destiny trilogy also has crew rosters for the featured ships including Titan.

Well I've read all of Destiny so I have some familiarity with the Titan crew. I really need to start Titan..I havcen't read any Vanguard either. It would be nice to have another series I could just skip like New Frontier which I do not read.

I'm always reading a Trek book but some of them take me forever to finish.
