Getting back Into Lit

Orion's Belt 27

Sometime lurker, first time poster.

I've read Star Trek novels off and on for the last couple of years, mainly the early DS9 and TNG relaunch novels. I kind of stopped after Destiny. However, since a particular channel on our TV (the Heroes and Icons channel) began showing all five live action shows last month for the first time in years, I'm considering getting back into the novels as well.

I've been watching DS9 and Voyager on H & I. I don't mind watching Enterprise or TOS either, but due to limited DVR space to record shows and Enterprise airing so late at night while I rarely remember to catch TOS in the early evening, DS9 and Voyager are the only ones my parents record for us all to watch. We (or rather I) have all seven seasons of TNG and all 12 films on DVD. So far, H & I has shown all of Season 1 and the first 5 episodes of Season 2 of DS9 and all of Season 1 and the first 9 episodes of Season 2 of Voyager in order.

Regarding the novels, I've read Resistance, Before Dishonor, Greater Than the Sum, (I understand Christopher Bennett posts here, so let me say, Christopher, I enjoyed GTTS), and a couple of other various relaunch novels that I forget.

I'm looking at buying (or rebuying in some cases) the DS9, TNG, Voyager, and Enterprise relaunch novels, Titan, The Lost Era, Section 31, A Time to ..., The Battle of Betazed, and Cast No Shadow. It's my understanding that all of these are part of what is called "The Novel Verse." Are there any other novels that readers recommend I add to this list, especially TOS ones, because that era is a little confusing with so many novels? Also, regarding the numbered novel series during the shows' runs that ran until Pocket did away with the numbering scheme, are any of those worth looking at?

Thanks for the help and I look forward to talking with everyone more!

Well, if you like Christopher's work, you should definitely check out the Department of Temporal Investigations novels. The first one, Watching the Clock, is mostly about 24th century characters, as well as a tie-in with Enterprise, but the second, Forgotten History, tells how the DTI was created, and connects with most of the on-screen TOS time travel stories. I'd highly recommend both of those. If you like them, there's also an ebook, "The Collectors," and a second ebook, "Time Lock," coming out next month.

A lot of the recent TOS novels are pretty stand alone, and don't really tie in with the novelverse except through brief references. Many of them I haven't read, and can't really say much more about. In History's Shadow by Dayton Ward is another time travel story that features the TOS cast and various characters from DS9 and Voyager. Allegiance in Exile by David R. George is a TOS novel that ties in with the 24th century novels in an interesting way, although it's not George's best work. If you've followed the DS9 relaunch closely, it gives some interesting back story to some of the events of the relaunch.
