Getting a cat in its carrier

How do you do it?

My cat is such a spry little bitch that it is impossible to get her into her carrier with any fewer than 2 people. She HATES it. She fights and claws and scratches the shit out of you.

You have to do it while she's sleeping and disoriented. You have to wrap her in a towel or blanket, and then you have to fight with all your strength to get her inside the thing. It will take at least 2 tries, and hopefully after the first try she hasn't had time to hide under the bed. If she has, you're going to be at it for at least another 20 minutes.

Wrap her tightly in a towel or blanket so that her legs and arms are tucked back against her body and she can't use them. I've never had an issue getting my cats in a carrier, but giving them eat mite medication was another story. That's how I dealt with it.

Have the carrier set upright with the door open. Get a pillow case. Take the pillow case with you and lovingly pick the cat up. When you've lulled her into a false sense of security, stuff her in the pillow case. Take the pillow case to the carrier and empty it into the carrier. Then close and lock the door. The light is green, the trap is clean.

Sleeping pill in her food, the right amount of hours before the carrier.

Litter box in the carrier. She's gotta go sometime...

Food in the carrier. Gotta eat sometime...

Um, the carrier ain't that big. And she's only going for a 15 minute car ride.

I get my cat into the bathroom, where she has nowhere to hide, and then I shut the door. I put the carrier on its end and then I pick her up and put her in the carrier. It usually only takes a few tries before she gives up and lets me do it.

That's how we taught our cats to let us clip their nails when they were kittens. Works for giving pills, too. Never tried it for the carrier, though.

One of our kitties didn't like the carrier, and we found this worked:

Put a treat in the carrier as far as possible from the door and close the door. Set the carrier on the couch beside you and watch TV or just go about your business, completely ignoring the carrier and the cat, for a few minutes. We found the curiosity really did get the better of our kitty. After about 5 minutes, if you open the carrier door, we found that the cat would go in on his own pretty soon and then you can just shut the door. I used to sit on the couch with my arm over the carrier with the door open so that I could easily flip the door closed once kitty was in.

Funny thing was, the cat was otherwise pretty smart, but this trick worked every time ... for over 10 years. ;)

Good luck! :bolian:

If you haven't already tried this, leave the carrier open and accessible in the house for a few days or even longer, so she can check it out. Maybe put an occasional treat in it for her to find. Mine both stopped fighting me after they got used to their carriers being open on the kitchen floor, even the one who's terrified of the vet.

I ended up having to call my mom and get her to come over and help me.

It took us 45 minutes.

My cat is so calm and peaceful all the time, except when she needs to go in the carrier. We wrapped her in a towel...then dumped the towel in the carrier...and SHE STILL ESCAPED!

She's fucking evil.

My cat was like yours, RoJoHen. He was sweet and affectionate---until he thought he was going in the carrier. He was a Humane Society kitty, who spent half of the first year of his life in a box, so he did NOT like the carrier.

I had to leave it out, open, for days before hand. I even put food in it, but that didn't work, and the food would go bad before he'd go near it. So, I'd just shut the door on the room, turn the crate on it's end and drop the kitty into as best as I could.

Gloves and long sleeves were usually required.

I think I might have to get her de-clawed. It would have made this so much easier.

Dude! DON'T! Why do you have your cat de-clawed!?! To my eyes, that's cruel that beyond my comprehensive!

Shame on YOU!

Don't insult me, man.

De-clawed your cat is not good idea. Do you want to put her through? If you do, that's cruel, man. More like you're killing your cat rather than none. Listen to me, cats are precious gift that entered our lives to make our lives better, those cats are like our children, so you should thinking more wisely of you cat!
