Get on your bike son

(incidentally - for serious bike riders - is it possible to get a speedo for your bike? How do you know how fast you are going?)
Yes, they're normally called 'computers' as they (of course) also store your data and have multiple functions.

Wikipedia even has a page on such devices: here

I usually just calculate my speed using my time and distance. On the street with traffic I average around 10mph. Once I rode home from Union Square to my place in Brooklyn in 19 minutes (it was night, so there wasn't much traffic, and I caught every light green), that's about 14mph.

Between the town I live in and the university on the outskirts you can catch such a green wave if you ride 24 Km/h -signposts along the way inform you of your speed :)

^I had to calculate it, because I'm awful at remembering, but 24 kph is 14.9 mph -- so just about what I was going. I'd love to get on an open stretch and just ride like that. It's exhilarating riding in NYC, but you aren't often able to get to a high speed and maintain it. When I was in Kauai I rode from the top of the canyon to the coast -- that was sweet.

I think bike computers are worse than useless on most bikes, it just makes you self-conscious of the stupid machine on your handlebars when you should really be adapting your speed to what's going on around you; at least in city traffic.

Dont worry OP, my 60 year old mother cant ride a bike either, ive long since given up teaching her.

I haven't ridden a bike in almost 25 years. They say you never forget, so I suppose I'd pick up back up again if I ever restarted, but I'm much happier driving or walking. Even when I was university in a fairly bike-centric sort of place, I always walked (until I got a place with parking so I could bring my car).

Leave the bikes to the girls... :adore:

Strange... I've often pictured you getting around on a bike not entirely unlike this one:

Do you read The Sartorialist too? I can tell a Sart image when I see one; the super-saturated images are a dead giveaway. :D

That's a pretty sweet suit, too, by the way. For it to fit that well when in posing such an awkward position is impressive.

Mind you, Scott is obsessed by scarves and bikes... his blog is full of them!

^You'd be surprised how difficult it is to find an on-line image of a gent on a bike!

I -eventually- snatched that one off a blog called Gentleman Cyclist, where I also happened upon this one:

I'm 33 and have never ridden a bicycle. Not too keen on learning either.

And I thought I was the only one!

I admire you OP - I wouldn't have the courage to try except in the most remote of locations...

I'll assume you are referring to me?

Grab a bike and try it, you won't regret it.

Let me put it in a language that will be familiar to all Victorians

Walking somewhere = going to the MCG to watch your Sainters lose
Driving somewhere = watching your Sainters lose on television
Riding a bike somewhere = running out onto the MCG with your fellow Sainters, and losing

I trust this makes sense?

Swap 'Sainters' for 'Magpies' and 'losing' for 'winning' if it makes you feel better. It probably won't.

I was referring to you, but I wouldn't try it. With my level of coordination, walking is enough of a challenge.

Besides, I'm a Swans supporter... ;)
