German christmas markets

Do you get them in your town? The German market has been coming to Edinburgh for a decade or so now. At first it was a novelty but apparently they're in most big towns now. I love it. Wandering round the stalls, drinking gluwein, watching the skaters and the big wheel (okay the last two are part of the winter fair but it all adds up to the magic). I've been in pouring rain and, as last night, absolutely frigging freezing, but it's definitely part of the season's activities now.

No, but it sounds like something I wish would come to our town.

Since I live in Edinburgh too, then yes I know exactly the one you mean and I love it. I haven't been this year though because of the snow (yeah, I know I'm being a total muppet).

No, no German markets in Houston, unfortunately. You'd think they'd be more popular in Texas, considering so many towns in the state were founded by Germans.

The only real German thing that Texans seem to go for is Octoberfest; every damn town seems to have one---probably because they make a lot of money. Texans will show up by the truck-load if there's beer involved.

There hasn't been one in Exeter, the city centre closest to me, for two years, and I'm bummed about it. I loved the German market in previous years. On the up side there's a farmer's market every Thursday morning with plenty of tempting goodies, including local real ale.

Do remember to order your Glühwein "mit Shuss" (with [a] shot) -that's the good stuff!

Love the annual Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park! Had the best beef burger I've tasted anywhere there, and my group went nuts about the bratwursts and potatoes with bacon. The amusements were kewl too, I suppose (I go for the food :D).

German food is fantastic, does exactly what is says on the tin, no frills, but hits the spot darn well.

I love German Markets! They offer the most delicious winter food in the world. It's all about the meat and potatoes, bay-bee.

I also really like strolling around and looking at all the little stalls with their Christmas decorations and souvenirs and knick-knacks for sale, I always end up buying something, I just can't go home empty handed. :)

Near where I grew up in Iowa, the Amanas (several small German villages) would have something like a German market in Main Amana around Christmas. But sadly, I was too young for Gluehwein, then.

Nothing like that in the DC area that I know of. If there was, I suspect I'd have found it by now. There is a good German market in Falls Church, though. Went there about a week ago and spent a lot of money on good German meats, some wines, and some bottles of ready-made Gluehwein.

Julemand, I've heard of wheat beer "mit einem schuss" of woodruff or raspberry syrup, but what kind of shot do you put into Gluehwein?

I live right near the biggest concentration of shopping in the Boston suburbs, all we have is a traffic nightmare from Thanksgiving to New Years.

There are some of those Christmas market in Paris (one on the Champs Elysées) but I don't find them very interesting. I'd rather go directly to the one in Strasbourg, it's not a long travel now with the high speed train and it looks beautiful :)

I went to the Christmas market in Edinburgh when I was up there a couple of weeks back. I didn't enjoy it as much as the one that's in Bath each year. That one is amazing. I have to confess that the one in Edinburgh looked great though in the snowy park.

I'd love to have a German market near me. The only time I've been to one is one that's actually in Germany, in Cologne, so, living in the rural area that I do, I wasn't even aware there were any outside Germany.

There's still none near enough me for me to go to.

When I went into Nottingham a few years ago they had one then.
Went into Nottingham this year but it was just a normal Christmas market, It was a bit crap this year to be honest with you.
