George Perez reveals terminal cancer diagnosis

When I first saw the DC image on Twitter, I didn't realize it wasn't a Perez piece. Then I thought, "Well, maybe DC clipped characters from various Perez pages to make this." And then I saw an article about it and went, "Oh." Followed by, "Wow, Todd McFarlane actually contributed to this jam piece?"

If DC sells this as a poster, I'll buy it. :)

I just heard about this today and I can't stop crying.

Of course George wants to see (and hug) as many fans as possible. He is That Guy.

I discovered George's art with issue #1 of New Teen Titans back in 1980 (bought at a Stuckey's on the road to see relatives). I bought Crisis on Infinite Earths as it came out in 86. Ditto for his Wonder Woman. And a ton of his other works.

But loving his art just got me to go meet him at 2 local cons. At the first one, there was NOBODY at his table. This offended me but also afforded me the chance to have a nice one-to-one talk with him. Mostly about Wonder Woman. He signed my (and my mom's) copies. He signs fast and talks even faster.

The 2nd time I met him, there was a line a mile long and I was in it for 3 hours. I was in terrible physical shape and some nice folks with me got me a chair and we talked about Titans. When I got to the front (and got my WW sketch), I found that the line was "slow" because George still took the time to talk each fan as if they were the only person in the world. :luvlove:

He is truly "Gentleman George" - unfailingly kind, sweet, funny, and happy to geek out about comics with the rest of us.

He also has a HUGE heart. He is one of the founders of The Hero Initiative, which helps comic creators in need, most of whom are freelance and often live with little to no financial cushion.

When I heard he'd retired, I was sad for the reasons, but glad he had the financial wherewithal to do so, as so many of his heroes didn't. Now, to hear this...

Fuck cancer.

He did an interview soon after his announcement (https://www.gamesradar.com/george-p...e4_k86b5SwpdSQFkd88coB72B-QjRo04GT5bVKbP2C11E) and, unsurprisingly, when asked what fans could do for him, replied:

"...the Hero Initiative would be a great place to donate in my name. Just donate something in my name to them, and it'll be the greatest compliment of all. Pay it forward. If they really want to show me I've made an impact, give. Give to someone or some organization, Hero Initiative or not... but just give."

Sad news, but familiar. An old friend of mine was diagnosed with stage 4 lung and brain cancer 6 months ago, and after brain surgery and radiation we told that even with chemotherapy his life expectancy was anywhere from 6–18 months. The chemo would have required 40 day-long 270-mile round trips, so, like Perez, he decided against it. He passed away on Saturday morning.

I so wish my mother had chosen to forego chemo. Without chemo we might have had three or four months with her, but the chemo left her mind a foggy mess from the moment she started it. She only "woke up" for a few days when she wasn't strong enough and had to miss two rounds of chemo. The last good memory I have with her was doing a crossword puzzle--her mind was sharp as a tack again and I was left just filling in the letters.
My heart is with you both. *HUGS*

Just saw the news about Perez, and this is definitely gonna be a big loss for the comic book community. I haven't read any stuff he worked on yet, but I know he's a legend.
Feel free to come over to my house. I have JLA/Avengers btw. :D

Ditto. Hopefully with all the proceeds going to Hero Initiative.

I'll have to keep that in mind. I do have the digital version of his WW run, which I might have to start once I've finished some of the other series I'm working on.

Cool. You have to help me pull the long boxes out of the closet.

Doing the quick math - George was 21 when he illustrated my Fantastic Four #171; already a talented artist

Also, George mentions the Hero Initiative as a an organization to donate to. I would just like to say that every year on the anniversary of my father's passing, I donate, in his name, to the hospice that took care of him in his final days. It's $72, the age he was when he was when he died. Just my small contribution to the work they did to help ease his pain and discomfort.

Unfortunately, this is one of those threads where every time I see an update I'm going to wonder if it's a post announcing George's passing. I know I've had time to prepare for it, but it's still gonna hurt.
This is a really good point (that I'm finally responding to). I'd like to formally request that when George Perez passes, this thread be locked, and an all-new thread be started to announce his passing. That way there isn't a sudden shift in the nature of our praise for his work.

There has been a breakthrough where—when sound waves destroy even part of a tumor, the rest cannot regrow…very new. Too late perhaps—but I will hope.

The more I look at DC's tribute piece, the more I feel the absence of the Marvel Family, but then I think the only time Perez worked with the Marvels was in Crisis and War of the Gods, while the Legion, which at first seemed odd to me, has more of a claim to belong because of Legion of 3 Worlds (which, for some reason, I always overlook).

One of the top three pencillers informing my youth, along with John Byrne and John Romita, Jr. Sucks that someone works his whole life then when he should be enjoying retirement, he has no time left.
