Geocities shutting down...

You should really initiate a domain transfer ASAP. GoDaddy.com is a good service. I don't use them but most people I know do. I am just attached to the service I started with, years and years ago... I still only pay $12.50 a year, though. Sure beats the $70 for two years we all used to had to fork over to NetSol...

And I think sometimes they have sales, for 2$/yr don't they? Not sure how much for private reg., but I need it- I already get plenty of "give me a job in movies" or "have _____ come to my house" emails. :vulcan:

12.50$ seems so cheap!!

Someone posted a free host I made an account with, but their upload thing is weird. Ummm... 000webhost? Something like that? I've uploaded stuff, followed instructions... but I don't see anything. It's bizarre.

I was in several gaming guilds/clans that used Geocities websites. I never bothered making a website, but I do have a lot of memories of Geocities and the old gaming guilds I was once apart of.

At least I've solved the problem. I signed up at www.110mb.com after checking out some interesting sites which I did find in the link that Robert Maxwell provided. They got a lot of positive reviews so I thought it could be worth a try.

I've just uploaded all files to the new location which is

http://lynx677.110mb.com/

I would also like to thank everyone who have come up with suggestions and offers. :techman:

That place looks v interesting Lynx, I might give them a go with mine.

Wow talk about a pang of nostalgia.

I remember in "the old days" when almost every site was a geocities site... with pop ups, annoying ads and those triple damned midi clips (I still have the mental scars from those). It's not that I miss that, but back then they hosted a lot of my favourite fan sites from gaming to TV shows, most of them pretty poorely designed but with a lot of enthusiasm put into them. You also had those sites that had "Under Construction" on them and had been that way for years.

kinda saddening.

Ah, memories. I started out on free Geocities, but being UK based there were rarely any adverts on it.... then it got too big and I had to start paying for hosting.
Now I'm trying to prise my domain out of their hands to a UK firm who will charge me 1/3 the price. And boy are yahoo making it difficult. Transfer in should take 1 or 2 days according to the new hosts. Yahoo says transfer out will be 9 days. Grr....

Yahoo/Geocities is closing the Geocities part in which the free websites obviously are located. Instead they are trying to steer those who have free websites to their "award-winning Yahoo! Web Hosting service" which you have to pay for.

Hmm... since my Domain registration costs 50$ a year  maybe I should go with their 60$/year plan with comes with a free domain...

But that's something then, I thought from the original message they were shutting down their whole hosting dohickey.

$50 a year? For a domain?? Is this USD or some other strange currency? There is absolutely no way you should be paying that much for a domain...

Yeah, StarscapeBBS.com used to be hosted on Yahoo, but it went from $9.95 a year to $39.95 a year and I said in Will Smith style, "Ah, hell naw!" and moved to another domain. $40 a year for a domain name. That's garbage.

Got an email from Geocities (apparently my Geocities page is frequently viewed):

Geocities will shut down in October.

I love how geocities will shutdown; those sites were often too horrible to look at. There are lots of other places on the internet nowadays that let you have a site without knowing the technology behind it; the only difference is that you'll actually end up with something that works (is valid html/css; no framesets) and doesn't hurt the eyes.

Agreed! Still only about 10$ with GoDaddy... I wish their hosting was cheaper if you could have... I dunno... less than 100 emails... LOL

I didn't think my site was horrible... but then again, with a free host... bound to fill up with... umm... stuff.

I don't know how your site looks, but look at the first few geocities webpages google comes up with:

http://www.geocities.com/doowopp21/
http://www.geocities.com/heritages_cambodia/
http://www.geocities.com/dcheddie/
http://www.geocities.com/freedomfightertjm/
http://www.geocities.com/med_dictionary/

Yeah... that's what I mean. It probably impacts me more then it does a regular user (seeing as designing websites is my job), but to see sites like these physically pains me. However, there are lots of alternative free hosts out there today that make it harder to much things up. ;)

^ Agreed.

I don't need to look at the links as I know exactly what you mean. It's a style curse thats spread to the MySpace of anyone under the age or IQ or 12.

For those who have Geocities hosting, but don't log in often etc., I thought I'd let you know that Yahoo! is shutting it down. They haven't released any other information, they say it's coming later, but that they're shutting it down later this year. So make sure you back up your stuff...

I for one find this a huge pain, now I need to relocate a ton of stuff...

Anyway, just a heads-up.

Wow. I think I attempted to use Geocities as my first hosting service, but I didn't like them too much, because of the ads mainly. For those who still want a good free service, I use Atspace, they have up to 50 GIGs of space to use for free. It's kind of handy, but sometimes they do have some downtime I don't like but for free hosting I recommend it.
