Geocities shutting down...

For those who have Geocities hosting, but don't log in often etc., I thought I'd let you know that Yahoo! is shutting it down. They haven't released any other information, they say it's coming later, but that they're shutting it down later this year. So make sure you back up your stuff...

I for one find this a huge pain, now I need to relocate a ton of stuff...

Anyway, just a heads-up.

Mine too! Argh, I need to move everything... change every link... And given their unlimited email storage, I think it's silly to ditch their web hosting...

Wow, I had my very first website on Geocities, back in 1996. That place is like an institution. Sad to see it go. :(

Wow, yeah, I remember the days when like everybody used GeoCities to build their first website.

Sad to see it go. I've still got some stuff on there, guess I'd better move it over to my own domain soon.

Oh, bummer. My first website was hosted there... kinda the end of an era.
Yep. I had my first website-- a fansite-- there, which was also my first and only site ever killed for TOS and Copyright violations back during the 90s. So long old friends.

Crazy...

Now that I think of it, I have 2 websites... and I use two more ids for hosts.
I have so much work ahead of me! =(

I'm hoping they'll put together something that'll download everything at once so I don't have to download a million files...

Ah Geocities, my first site was there, too.

Actually, that's a lie, thinking about it, my first was with 'homepage.com', then i moved to Geocities. But still, it was a long time ago!

This sucks, like many of you my first site was on there (and still is I think).

This really is the end of an era. :(

Charlie

Oh shit. My first and only web page is there. Ah well. Time to shut it down and move on, then.

I had my site at geocities a few years ago too, but when I changed web hosts my new host moved all of the files for me for free. It saved me a ton of work since moving one file at the time, the geocities way, is really time consuming. I'm sure any web host would do the same for you if you ask them to. :bolian:

I *must* look into that.

On that note- some of you don't seem to have updated your sites in the last while... but they're still there! Geocities deleted all my stuff once cuz I hadn't updated it in 3 months... You're all sure your stuff is there? I had to scrape to find stuff to keep it active.

I thought they went a while ago until I read this on twitter!

For alternates yo can still google for guides such as this one - there are much better guides but I can't seem to find them right now.

Plus if anyone has a problem I'd be more than happy to store anything on a subdomain until you get settled elsewhere. And I'm still trying to get rid of my communistpartyuk stuff, so theres a whole domain waiting for some lucky communist ;)

Geocities was so awful with their garish ads and such. I used Earthlink back in '97 and my e-mail still has that domain.

Has anyone used TopCities? I need a web-page that's really easy to set up, since I'm such dumb-ass with that sort of thing.

my THIRD site was on Geocities. my first was on freebeeb.net before moving to Polycount the games site.

it was a New Frontier fan-site.

i actually have a 'crappy' page for my Transformers Quake 2 skins on GC now...

Odd question but curiousity is kicking in...

Did they still use the old 'geocities.com/StrangetownLA/SomethingElse/YourSite' style or did they actually put subdomains in?

Wow. For me this really is an end of an era. Geocities had a HUGE influence on my life.

Back in 1996 it was the home of my first Star Trek site... which spurned my getting a web designer job, getting own domain, then the site being bought by Fandom.com, then me working for them for a while, then that later led to me doing a B5 site and working on TrekToday/TrekBBS.

I also setup my a Martha Hackett site there.

still remember my addresses.

R.I.P. Geocities. You have had a huge influence on my life!

Yeah, I'm going to have to relocate the bulk of "Star Trek: New Worlds" to my Yahoo Group, and see what I can do from there.
