Genres that you can't stand

Over the years, I have noticed that some viewers refuse to even consider watching anything of a particular genre or format; for instance, westerns or superhero movies, or anything animated.

I seek to understand the reasoning behind rejecting an entire genre, as I consider compelling storytelling and good characterization to be of primary importance as universal qualities which transcend genres. And there is usually a diverse range of storytelling styles within a particular genre, with something to appeal to everyone if you are open-minded and give it a chance.

That being said, I've never been interested in reality television, as everything seems so contrived and unconnected with "reality," and the petty squabbles get old fast. And romantic comedies in general make me gag. I try sitcoms time and time again, and I find that this type of humor just doesn't work for me.

So what genres do you refuse to watch, and why? What is it about these particular genres that you find so off-putting?

There's also a fancy poll attached to this thread, so we can see if there are any trends among the denizens of this BBS. I tried to include as many varieties as I could think of off the top of my head (in no particular order), but I probably forgot some. And some categories might be considered a little too broad. So feel free to comment on any that I missed, or anything that you feel isn't specific enough, etc.

Reality TV is trashy, but it often runs on my TV. But I mute the tone. And it is only the case when there is really nothing else watchable on TV. I'm not a fan of War movies and Musicals. I hate trash shows like I'm a celebrity get me out of here where questionable celebrities have to eat animal genitals (aaaaaaaaaaaargh).
Horror: it depends. I like some Stephen King movies, but I prefer the horror to be subtle and not splatter movies with rolling or exploding heads.
I'm also not a big James Bond fan, but I like Moonraker. Movies about Jason Bourne I find rather boring, though.

I suppose so-called scripted "reality tv shows" for me is a definite off. I also don't watch much in the way of sports (Rather do than watch).

Anything else, I might give a try.

I don't watch any Anime, but that might be a simple lack of introduction.

RomComs tend to be mind numbingly identical and as such I rarely watch those.

I don’t like horror, crime dramas, any thrillers, war, political, foreign anything because it’s too difficult to read subtitles and watch, and sports.

This poll is missing a "None" option.

There's really no genre that I'm not willing to engage with. Not even Reality TV, as I loved Comic Book Men and still rewatch episodes from time to time. Hell, I hate sports, but I like quite a few movies about sports.

So, yeah, while I definitely have preferred genres, with each and every one listed above I can think of at least one movie or TV show that I liked.

I don't watch horror films (especially the grindhouse type films), and I am generally not a fan of reality TV, though I don't know if game shows count because I do like those, and I like talk shows such as Ellen.

Reality tv - you cannot point a camera at someone and get an honest, real reaction out of them.

I can watch pretty much anything else. Whether I like it or not depends on the content.

Germany has its own bunch of Reality TV. I call it Trash TV. @StefanM will confirm it or add some I've forgotten.

Dschungelcamp, Schwiegertochter gesucht, Adam sucht Eva (naked celebreties and normal people on an island, this is more a topic for TNZ), shows with socially underprivileged families (Harzt IV TV).... etc. It begs for second-hand embarrassment.

The German version of Dancing with the Stars (Let's dance) is quite entertaining, because the celebrities have to work hard and perform. And they are more or less dressed for a change....:D

And: I'm not sure if I can understand it. People tend to dislike the horror genre but love the TNG episode Conspiracy with Remmick's exploding head. I'm at a loss.

I don't like reality shows, but I absolutely loved Face Off and that would probably fall under a reality show category. I don't like horror shows unless Walking Dead is categorized as horror. I watched WD for a few years. I can't think of any slasher show I ever enjoyed though.

Personally, I consider the dance programs as more legitimate performance/talent contest shows.

I'm glad nobody has voted for science fiction so far!

Reality tv and most soap operas. I don't like the real life/scripted thing with the former and the latter, I never really liked overall.
