Regarding uniform colors, if a crewman holds positions in two different departments, their uniform color should be the secondary color formed by both primary colors.

Wesley's 3 division color stripes make perfect sense for a generalist.

I only found out recently that that was supposed to be Wesley’s provisional uniform.

I always just thought it was his favourite jumper.

There’s no hard canon stating that Station-Salem One wasn’t the start of the Cardassian Border Wars. Its just more plausible to believe that the destruction of Salem One was a part of the Romulan Wars.

Until the origins of the Romulan Wars takes the idea of the Romulans rarely triggering a war by firing first seriously, and its Earth or an ally that started the war.

Actually, a deleted line implied Beverly Crusher had an ancestor at Salem, implying it was quite long ago - as I recall.

In my head canon Station Salem One was the sneak attack that started the Earth-Romulan War, coming a year or so after the events in the "Babel One" story arc on ENT. Salem One was a Starfleet facility constructed in neutral space but unknowingly not that far from the Romulan border.

I thought so too — in 1987, that was actually a fairly normal looking sweater.

It’s a little more colorful than was usual (today we’d just take it in stride as a rainbow), but the basic style? Sure it was.

I believe many characters state or imply Starfleet academy takes only the best and the brightest, that all the best people go to the academy, and that you have to belong to the best of the best to even graduate there, including in scientific fields.

Yet there seem to be many institutes for advanced scientific study in the UFP and renowned scientists that seemingly have nothing to do with Starfleet (as you would expect in such an advanced society), and there must a lot of great minds there that really don't have any fancy for space travel, and simply want to conduct their research behind their desks on a planet, only traveling through space to attend the odd conference or so.

So, is it actually true that the Academy gets all the best people or is Starfleet mainly blowing its own trumpet here?

Maybe it just has high standards, but not insurmountable ones. I mean, Barclay made it through the academy, despite having some issues.
