General Trek Questions and Observations

General Trek observation

I just noticed the TNG opening titles is one continuous shot.

Must've cost a fortune to film.

Wow, really? Out of morbid curiosity, what excuse (if any) do they use to justify wildly different uniforms sandwiched between two eras where the uniforms are almost exactly the same?

Per "Brother", different ships use different uniforms. The Disco Blues date back to at least the 2230s and have been seen on most ships and worn by Admirals on Starbases. The Enterprise variation first seen in Brother (possibly first glimpsed in background shots of Will You Take My Hand?) is described as newer, but apparently not a full-on replacement, similar to the DS9 jumpsuits vs. the TNG two-pieces over a hundred years later.

The classic turtlenecks worn by Pike's crew in The Cage (and will be worn by Kirk's crew in WNMHGB and also the Antares crew in Charlie X) is probably an older variant used by some crews.

They don't justify it. They are simply taking familiar characters and using them in their own separate version of Trek.
------
There are 3 timelines. All Trek made before 2009 is the timeline we know. Then there is the two-pronged universe of all Trek from 2009 on, consisting of "Prime" of Discovery, and the Abramsverse. In "Prime", the destruction of Vulcan didn't happen. The characters and events are a little closer to what we know, but not really very close at all.
-----------------------
This is my understanding of it all from what I've been hearing, and it makes sense of the blatant differences in how everything looks too. Now I know it's not at all seen as the official story. There are complicated business reasons for having altered the look and characters and history, while telling fans it's set in Trek's original timeline.
---------------------
None of this interferes with enjoying Discovery, if you do. I haven't seen enough yet. It could be interesting seeing different takes on these characters, but let's not try to fit it into the TOS timeline.

Nope.

By the way, they don't need to justify uniform changes any more than the insignia switch of science and engineering divisions that occurred just for "Where No Man Has Gone Before" needed justification, or for that matter any more than the reintroduction of a primary-color scheme for uniforms, but with the colors for command and operation divisions switched, that occurred sometime between the TMP and TNG eras needed justification.

Found this online for International Women's Day and I'm trying to work out who one of the characters is. In between T'Pol and the Andorian officer who's name I also can't recall.

I can't really make out the face. Is it perhaps intended to be Captain Hernandez of the Enterprise's sister ship?

ETA: Comparing it to memory alpha's ENT recurring characters list, I'd say it's supposed to be Crewman Cutler. The hairdo seems to match, anyway, and there aren't exactly a plethora of possibilities from that show. Also the fact that I can't see the colored stripe on her uniform and Cutler's is dark green on dark blue, ergo, hard to see from far away.

I agree.

Where's Hoshi Sato? The woman on the far left has the wrong division.

To be honest, the woman on the left looks like Hoshi and Hernandez had a transporter accident.

I thought that too. I thought it was supposed to be Hoshi on the far left, but it doesn't look right.

Looking closer at the rest, is it just me or is Janeway way too small in comparison to the others around her? And her hair looks brown instead of red and doesn't seem like any of her typical hairstyles, either.

Somebody remind me who the TOS character in the blue and black outfit is? I'm looking through google images but there are too many vaguely similar costumes, all generally on one off characters that don't really make sense in this list.

So I know Starfleet Academy is in San Francisco, and I know there have been Brits in Starfleet - Malcolm Reed being the only one I can think of at the moment - and people from other countries as well, would a person from another country have to come from their respective country to America, San Francisco to attend Starfleet. Would I be correct in that.....? They don't have it in other countries right, or do they.

It would seem so. Concerning students on Earth, it's no different really from living near Bath and going to uni in Stoke like I did.
