Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

I can't believe the season premiere is tomorrow. Time flies. I'm already half-way through the Mirror Universe. Factoring in my work schedule and other things I have to do in Real Life, I think my re-watch will sync up with finishing right before "Brother" starts. That's unintentionally perfect timing.

I think I'll pick up some cinnamon flavored rum. Just for the heck of it. I'll take shots of whatever's left over, when I see the entire checklist of reactions here. It'll make for a good drinking game. As long as I avoid posting while shitfaced.

Reactions to the Enterprise, when we see more of it, will be fun, fun, fun. That's why I'll need the rum. Though I'd love to be wrong. I'm hoping I'm wrong.

I will be slightly delayed watching because I'll have to watch the back half of Orville first.

Time to break out "Discovery Complaint Bingo," perhaps?

Or maybe just take a shot at the mention of any of the following:

Gene's Vision
Doesn't feel like real Star Trek
Dark lighting
Canon
Lazy writing
Visual inconsistencies with TOS

You'll be shitfaced in like 8 minutes. Just don't die.

The neatest way to kill a bunch of people all at once is in a circle and to promise the one lackey you let live that you'll make them a governor. That's how it's done! If you're going to be evil, like Emperor Georgiou, you might as well do it with some style.

When that guard is constantly screaming at Lorca to say his sister's name, that reminds me of Heisenberg in Breaking Bad: "Say my name!" When the guard is down on the ground after he stupidly lets Lorca out, he should've stomped on his chest, stomach, or nads instead of just kicking him in the head.

What makes the Disco Mirror Universe episodes so much better than the other series' is that they don't hold back at all. It actually feels savage. That's the way it's supposed to be.

The heck with it. I'm into the home stretch. Putting on the fourth and final disc. Comments to be edited in periodically as I go along.

The fight at the end of "What's Past Is Prologue" is like The Matrix meets Kill Bill! Lorca's Bill. Georgiou's Beatrix Kiddo. Michael's BB, except grown.

I just finished my rewatch a few days ago. I actually found the final two episodes to be a lot better than my initial watch of the show had me feeling. Shazad Latif is a really good actor.

^ The best twist is at the end of "What's Past Is Prologue" when Saru says, "It looks like the Klingons have won the war!" At the time, I didn't see that coming at all. I was like, "Shit! How the Hell are they going to get out of this?!" The exact type of reaction a cliffhanger should leave you on.

Shows just how important Discovery was to the war effort. But I think if it had been around, it would've been destroyed. The losses (20% of the Federation) were so heavy, Discovery would've overexerted itself going from one battle to the next. All it could do is outrun the enemy with the Spore Drive, if there were too many of them, and once one of them would've knocked out Discovery's shields, they'd have been finished if the Klingons got them at just the wrong moment. Or one caught the Discovery blind-sided as a Klingon ship would've uncloaked right next to it.

I don't think Discovery would've lasted the whole nine months, Spore Drive or not. And I just remembered that Stamets wasn't willing to use the Spore Drive anymore after "Into the Forest I Go", like he told Lorca. So Discovery, after that, would've been just another ship. Unless the Admirals forced Stamets into interfacing with the Spore Drive again.

EDIT: In TUC, Admiral Cartwright said about the Klingons, "The opportunity here is to bring them to their knees, then we'll be in a far better position to dictate terms."

In "The War Within, the War Without", Emperor Georgiou says the same thing. The only way to beat the Klingons is to bring them to their knees. I don't think this was a homage. I think this was deliberate set-up if DSC is the opposite end of TUC and they're book-ends. For this reason, I think putting the bomb in Qo'noS is connected to the eventual explosion of Praxis.

Another bookend: Burnham is there when the War with the Klingons starts. Spock is there at the Khitomer Peace Conference. One sibling played a role at the beginning, the other sibling played a role at the end.

Georgiou (to Burnham): "Specialist Burnham, I trust this will be an auspicious reunion, despite our history. Now take your station." Nice double-meaning right there. ;)

I finished my rewatch tonight. I particularly enjoyed finding all the tiny hints about Lorca and Ash. This one stood out to me:

Ash (about why he's escaping now, with Lorca): Getting out was always a two-man job.
I just waited 'til I found the right man.

Whether he realized it or not, he was in fact programmed or set up to escape with Lorca...

In case anyone's interested, here's a comparison of updated VFX shots between earlier trailers and the one that just dropped. Nothing too crazy, but there are some little changes worth noting:
  1. On average, the final shots area more brightly exposed and highly saturated.
  2. Motion blur and particle effects have been added/refined.
  3. Some CG elements and graphics have are now more detailed.
  4. THEY'VE GOTTEN RID OF THE FAKE CHROMATIC ABERRATION. You don't know how happy that makes me as someone who spends time removing that from shots all day. That's the red/green shift you see in the first warp shot but not the second.

I've now reached the only episode of DSC that I haven't seen before - the Season 1 finale - and am really excited to see for myself how the Klingon War is resolved and the way that the writers set us up for Season 2 just in time to dive into said season when it premieres tonight. :)

To your point, the big difference at this point of the game was the cloak-breaking algorithm...THAT would have prevented the war from getting out of hand more than Discovery's spore drive. It would have evened the odds...and if you recall, back in the log entry in M2MTSMGM (before the cloaking tech had been widely propagated), Starfleet was doing WELL in the war.

Didn't finish the entire season last night. Still have to re-watch "Will You Take My Hand?" For the heck of it, because I got through more yesterday than I thought I would, I'll throw in "The Cage" too. I think I'll put on "The Cage" and then "Will You Take My Hand?" I want to roll from the end of Season 1 right into Season 2.

Random thoughts: Lorca would've been great in "The Siege of AR-558". And the fight scenes in the Mirror Universe should have the soundtrack from Escape From LA to go with it.

My beverage of choice for tonight is going to end up being Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey.

You're right about that!
