Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

The bridges in STO as always so ridiculously big...
camera view reasons. having designed a few 3d starships able to be "walked around in" I've love to go more for the crowded "das boot" look, but with viewer client issues, it simply does not work out. ceilings have to be high, elbow room has to be found around the physical models. They did probably about as well as they could, honestly.

What's interesting about that though, is that when They made the two versions of the Voyager Bridge, They were able to bring the scale way down and be pretty close to actual scale size for the ship compared to all the other ones They created before that.
Go figure...

I'm glad there wasn't any extended combat in those Voyager interiors. Even with the hallways being 1.5 bigger then the show, it still felt cramped when fighting in them, and not very fun.

Different design team from launch IIRC.

Large interiors are really a staple for third person MMOs, just look at Elder Scrolls Online, Star Wars the Old Republic, World of Warcraft etc.

Buildings in those games are usually have large interiors for the same reasons STO's are, for camera, movement and combat reasons.

I think the only reason STO gets flack for it is that they're recreating something.

His wife is the spokesperson for some diet plan. Maybe he went on the plan too or maybe he's on the diet that Dorn uses. Probably to get healthy

Everyone should stay healthy but I think Frakes, in particular, wants to be able to direct Star Trek -- now that it's back on TV -- for many years to come. Add the diet plan to it and everything seems like it was just in the right place at the right time for him.

The lighting on the bridge is different. They lit it with color. It's a welcome return that wouldn't have fit the first season but looks like it would fit here.

Eh if you look at BTS images of Season 1 it was the same way.

A friend of mine thinks they dimmed some of the bridge shots in post production based on how the light would appear around the light sources, like it was be suppressed.

DISCO officially comes back in January.

I wonder if the bird like figure is meant to represent a phoenix.

I'm sure it's meant to be some pseudo-angelic thing. We know "science vs. faith" is going to be a big element of this season.

I really, really hope they come down on the side of science in the end. Bringing "real religion" into Trek (rather than just advanced energy beings pretending to be gods) could break the franchise for many.

at what point is an advanced enough energy being NOT a god?

Hmmm.

I'm very much in favor of "open to interpretation". Star Trek in the past has been very atheistic, except on DS9 when it was more agnostic. They probably won't bring "real religion" into it, for or against. The studio would veto it immediately.

William Shatner wanted the Enterprise to actually encounter God in TFF, which Harve Bennett wisely talked him out of. Then there's The God Thing, which if it had been made, would've given Gene Roddenberry infamy but also would've killed Star Trek dead in its tracks. Blacklisted for turning God into a villain. In some more religious regions, they probably would've pulled TOS reruns and Paramount would've gotten a ton of shit for even green-lighting it.

Times have changed but, in the case of showcasing real religion, I don't think they've changed at all. It makes no sense to do something that's suicidal to the franchise when they're trying to build it back up.

Tiny bit of New York Comic-Con Panel Info

https://trekmovie.com/2018/10/01/of...ster-reveals-release-date-and-teases-mystery/

One final bit of news from the EW report is that actress Rebecca Romijn, who will play Number One of the USS Enterprise in season two, will be moderating the New York Comic Con panel this Saturday. The panel attendees include Sonequa Martin-Green, Anson Mount, Anthony Rapp, Wilson Cruz, Shazad Latif, Mary Chieffo, Doug Jones, and Ethan Peck.

The NYCC Discovery panel is being held at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on October 6 at 4 PM ET. TrekMovie will be there to bring you all the news.

So the actors who play Number One and Spock will be there.

I wonder if we'll get a picture of Ethan as Spock, and a full picture of Romijn in uniform.

Or maybe they could not tell us what and how to think and just present both sides of the argument thoughtfully? Thus respecting the values and opinions of all?

In fact, in a polarized world that seems to feed off black and white positioning on just about everything, that would be a welcome and enlightened stance to take.

"Both sides" in any argument about religion would inevitably be taken by as promoting the other side's views by everyone.
