Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

It wouldn't surprise me if we do start to see elements of the TOS clothes, and maybe signs of hair, as Klingon culture has to start going through a major cultural change. I don't think they're going to redesign the look too drastically though. Then again when has the look of Klingons ever been stable? Hell maybe they molt as a species every decade. Next phase is Doctor Zoidberg.
Well L'Rell and Voq's unshirts in the first couple episodes were very TOS.

I am curious if the DSC showrunners might go for the Klingon fusion race explanation this time around for the ever changing Klingon appearance.

I remember reading a ST compendium type of book. I am not sure if it was actually a ST compendium or encyclopedia or something of the kind. I think it was published in the 80s or 90s.

Anyway, this was the time after the TMP turtle head Klingons were introduced but years before the augment virus explanation. The book explained away the Klingon TOS look by describing the TOS Klingons as a manufactured hybrid fusion race created by the Imperial Klingons (the turtle heads) in order to disguise the real look of the Klingons. The fusion (TOS) Klingons were used as a front group to deal with, and perhaps infiltrate, the human led Federation.

Voq was turned into Ash. I guess Voq/Ash is sort of like a fusion Klingon. After I saw the scene where it was revealed that Voq was engineered to be Ash, it didn't strike me as a novel idea because the fusion Klingon idea had been around for awhile.

If DSC does offer an explanation, in future episodes, regarding how DSC looking Klingons will come to look like TOS Klingons, it wouldn't surprise me if the DSC showrunners did not rehash the augment virus explanation, since they seem to like to do things their own way. The fusion Klingon idea might be a plausible option. Perhaps there will be more Voq/Ash fusion type of Klingons to come, which would lead to the TOS looking Klingons. Just my speculation.

Captain Riker on the bridge XD.
I heard now that they're gonna ONCE AGAIN redesign the Klingons. I make a bet they're either gonna go for the TOS Augment virus story or actually seeing coneheads with hair.
Again? What is about the Klingons that compel the showrunners to remake them over and over.

They look pretty consistent from 1979 to 2005. As far as the Kelvin Films, they're in the business of changing the look of everything. They weren't going to do Smooth Heads but they also wanted to avoid anything that reminds them of TNG like the plague. So they had to come up with a Third Look.

Then came Discovery. I'm pretty sure the look of the Klingons in Star Trek Into Darkness gave Bryan Fuller the freedom to think to himself, "I'm going to take what they did and go one step further!" Which sounds great... until Alex Kurtzman starts thinking about doing a Picard Series, so now they have a mess to fix.

Side note, according to Eaglemoss, the Vulcan ship Sarek used was called 'Solkar' not sure if that is the class name or not. Solkar is Sarek's grandfather, and according to some Non-Canon sources, the Vulcan who greeted Cochran in First Contact.

From The Catwalk

CREWWOMAN: You wouldn't know who was the first Vulcan ambassador to Earth. Six letters, ends with an R?
ARCHER: Solkar, I think.

Close to canon evidence, if you assume that the Vulcan at first contact also became the first ambassador. Might also just be one of those 'Admiral Archer's prized beagle' sort of things.

But Memory Alpha lists them as the same person based on the circumstantial evidence.

From Horizon
ARCHER: I don't remember anyone going after the Vulcan ambassador with pitchforks and torches when they first landed.

This is still circumstantial I think...the first ambassador of/from Vulcan to arrive at Earth wouldn't necessarily have to be the first ambassador between Vulcan and Earth as political entities. But then again if Solkar looks like a duck and so forth..

It was the Star Trek Roleplaying Game that introduced the "Fusion Klingon"' idea. There were three races:
Klingon/Human Fusion, Klingon/Romulans Fusion and Imperial Klingon. I always thought that was a cool idea.

I on the other hand did not. It just didn't make sense to me

This is a drive-by comment, but Ambassador Robert Fox was sent by the Federation to open diplomatic relations with Eminiar VII. Perhaps the Federation adopted Vulcan’s first/early contact protocols and routinely sent ambassadors on such missions. Especially when the plot called for a secondary antagonist. ;)
