In my opinion, I think those types of episodes worked when each season was 26 episodes long. Now that the episodes per season are around half that, I think that the standalone episodes would feel like filler.

I would certainly agree with that assessment. If they were gonna do it old style, there would have to be way more episodes.

Here's my thing-we've already had that, multiple times. I do not desire Star Trek to keep looking to the past (and this includes doing prequels or even sequels) when it is supposed to be forward-looking, towards our humanity's future (in one way or another).

While i agree that Star Trek should always be forward looking, I would not be adverse to taking advantage of the serial format and using it to adapt some of the best Star Trek novels that have been produced over the past 30+ years or so. I think doing this would make good use of the empty spaces CBSAA will have between series and better serve Star Trek in general than say more theme-ride films such as the Kelvin trilogy offered. I would, say, love a six episode adaptation of Strangers from the Sky, for instance.

I'd love to see Spock's World adapted. Enterprise: The First Adventure would be good too. For the Hell of it, I'd like to see Spock Must Die! made into a CBSAA Movie. Not everything would work out as well though. The Ashes of Eden is effectively the TOS Star Trek VII and that would've been great if it were made in the mid-'90s but wouldn't work without the original actors exactly since it reads as if it were a ST VII.

On the TNG end, I'd like to see Dark Mirror. And that would be moving into uncharted territory by testing the waters of recasting the TNG characters. If you wanted something quasi-DSC, the Section 31 series of novels that was done way back when could be adapted.

just a thought from a sick day:

with the producers frequently telling us the “discovery” in the title refers to the characters discovering themselves, have we ever thought maybe a future season (or even next season) would see our core cast on another ship? like... maybe even the enterprise?

i keep going back to the amazing casting of pike and number one, too good to be guest stars.

Come on, they aren't that more amazing than the Discovery crew. How is what we've seen of Number One more amazing than what we have seen of Tilly or Stamets or even Reno for that matter. And how is Pike more amazing than Michael or Saru? I get that there is nostalgia there and a respect for the role of captain, but Pike really isn't that unique or better than other characters we've seen, in my opinion.

Pike has more to do than Number One, so maybe, yeah I can see the appeal but come on, Number One has had one scene dropping off a file and she's more interesting than Saru or Tilly? Yeah, big fat no to that.

it was an observation on how great the casting is, i didn’t say they were better than the core cast or that the series should dump burnham and gang for the enterprise crew. i also very explicitly said that the core cast could transfer to another ship since the fidelity seems less to the ship named discovery than to the crew’s personal discovery. but cool.

To me, that type of episode would feel like they're taking valuable time away from the arc in the 13-15 episode format.

They felt more like filler in a longer season.

I don't normally post YouTube Videos to explain my point for me because I prefer to make the argument on my own. But Steve Shive's video is too good not to share. It sums up everything I think about the subject of Discovery and Canon. If you have the time watch it all the way through, you should. It's about half an hour. He brings up all the arguments brought up against DSC's canon status and shoots down every single one of them.

Bear in mind I virtually never post links to YouTube videos to prove my point. So if I'm doing so here, it's for a reason.

His argument against the mismatch in technology, uniforms, Klingons, overall look, established facts, etc. are "it doesn't matter." That's hardly a compelling argument.

Star Trek is a dramatic depiction of events in the Trekverse, not a literal documentary. It's the only way you can make sense of things like characters being recast, the universal translator also changing how lips move, things like nonsensical mood lighting for dramatic intent, etc.

A primary conceit of Trek is technology based upon humanity's understanding of it at the time. So, yeah, we're going to see differences. It's an art, not an historical record.

It's not a novel, it's not a movie, it's not a history. The nearest thing to Trek is mythology - interconnected stories written by numerous authors over generations, referencing and retelling each other. Consistency simply isn't a priority, or even possible given the spread of authors and time when stories are produced. Have you ever tried to figure out a timeline for Hercules' life given even just the major mythological stories about him? King Arthur? Robin Hood? Hell, even Batman? It can't be done and it's fruitless to get hung up on it. Every time they have actually taken valuable story time to try to iron out inconsistencies in-universe the result has been an awful story. I realize this isn't every fan's preference, but I'll take a good story over canon consistency every time.

So, I saw this meme, and had to share it. Not endorsing the intent, but it's funny because it encapsulates a section of Trek fandom:

But it doesn't matter, because it is just a tv show. Some trek fans take this made up nonsense way too seriously and sometimes behave like religious fanatics over the most pointless details.
