Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

I hope they tread lightly, slowly showing the Sphere Data’s evolution into Zora. Though I suppose they could do a timey whimey Tomorrow’s Discovery.

I was hoping Calypso would be a nice one off story on its own.

It was set on the Discovery in the far future. The Discovery then later went into the future (although not that far) and started name-dropping Calypso elements and reintroduced us to the Zora AI while hiring the same voice actress from Calypso.

Discovery and Calypso are so intertwined at this point that to just drop all that would be a major disservice to the story. I sincerely hope they don't do that, and continue with the world building into the Calypso era that the storyline seems to be heading toward.

There is no disservice. None. It simply is one facet of the Star Trek universe that doesn't automatically have to connect to the rest. It was fine on its own, in the far future, and required no further comment.

Judging by Michelle Paradise's comment, they are approaching Calypso as if it will take place 1,000 years into the future of the 32nd century. Because of this, it really won't "tie in" to the story at all. It will more be a postscript to the series than anything.

It's the fact that it required commenting at all. It really doesn't need that sort of comment and it strikes as an odd comment of, "Yup, we are fully aware of this Short Trek and want it to tie in together nicely." It's middling minutia and I'd rather do the checklist of Alpha Quadrant powers than this teeny, tiny, connections.

I am of the opinion that it was a bad idea to attempt to tie in Calypso. Part of the beauty of the story is that it was an inexplicable standalone. Many of the best episodes in Trek history would have been almost certainly partially ruined if they attempted to do "sequel" stories.

That said, if they are going to do it, better to do it as a coda to the series than to try and make Discovery go back in time for 1000 years and then "wait" for them.

Meh. Whatever. Its far enough down the line that it should matter little and Zora's a pretty cool idea so I'm fine with them exploring that aspect of it. While the eventual retcon of the Disco design is a little too much for me, whatever. I'm just along for the ride.
