Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

I realised last night that I find the mystery of The Burn boring
While it does warrant some degree of trying to find out what happened, the constant hinging on an incident that happened once and hasn't been repeated in a long time something that isn't interesting me.

I'd rather this now be Discovery (and by extension, the viewer) seeing and exploring this new time, somewhere no other Trek series has been set.

It's also kind of annoying in that it's hinted that Dilithium is what powers a starship, but from what I remember, Dilithium is used only to contain and harness the effect of the matter/antimatter combination through intermix. It isn't the power source. Why hasn't any other method been developed to substitute? They recharged the crystals in TVH using nuclear-powered photons. Why hasn't it been thought of here?

Maybe all will be revealed but yeah after 900 years I don't expect to go to my friend's home and find them using candles and firewood for light and heat as if its 1020 A.D lol.
The 900 year jump is a silly idea to begin with.

Robert Meyer Burnett recommends two upcoming DSC episodes:

he also says “Harlan Ellison will be raging in heaven”. So maybe Guardian of forever is involved in the episode.

as to RMB, I don’t care what he says, he seems to be a jerk.

I expect this 2 parter to set up the section 31 series. The story credit goes to Boey and Erika who are the S31 showrunners.

I just hope I'm not going to be reading endless articles about lawsuits over the use of the Guardian of Forever afterwards, that's all. I think this was the only thing that stopped TNG using it in their third season. And Harlan's continued grudge with the franchise across the next 40 years, over presumably never having been paid his full due for the original City on the Edge of Forever script.

I was thinking, humanity would be quite the easy target for the Borg in this far future time! But maybe the Borg have already been defeated forever sometime in the past. Hmmm.

Having Michelle Paradise on for part of season 2 and solidly in season 3 has has had a Micheal Piller like effect. Stability and expansion. Some of the new writers have done really well also, particularly with humor.

RAMA

This is a great observation. I also feel like there's a spark missing, although I don't know if it's a bad thing--just different? Definitely a shift from productively eccentric and off-kilter energy to something more measured, regular, and assured. Very S1/S2 TNG to S3 TNG, as you suggest.

ok:

I liked things about this episode. I liked that the authors are aware that michael is probably the worst, stubborn and selfish main character since Janeway. And I like that this is actually part of the shows themes. I also liked that georgiou has somekind of character developement going on. Makes the burden this character is to the show a little less. I kind of liked that Tilly made a fat joke about the cat, because it remindet me that watching discovery is better then to follow social media where the actress gets bodyshamed. Those meta jokes...are killing me. Except for the weak villain (who is one of many characters that cant be bothered to shoot georgiou despite she is begging for it) it was ok overall.

Btw. Ian Alexander is a great casting choice. Dude is quite charismatic and has good screen presence. (but obviously I have no idea because the constant praise M. Jeoh gets is more of a mystery then the burn to me.)

So this episode would get a 7/10 from me, buuuuuut because we had a decapitation, what was clearly a picard reference, it gets 500 nostalgia bonus points from me.
We have an episode discussion thread.

Apologies if repost, but Cardassian makeup has popped up on Instagram:

It's actually not particularly detailed. Looks like a rubber mask. But maybe that's to be expected on a background character.

In general I don't like how Kurtzman Trek designs basically all aliens (other than Vulcans/Romulans and Orions) as a solid mask of silicone, rather than the individual latex bits that a lot of Berman Trek characters had. It makes for more "alien aliens" but it also cuts down on facial expressiveness.
