Hey. I'm doing some genealogy research, and I was wondering what names would lead to female nicknames Willie (I only can think of Wilma) and Lattie.

Can anybody here help me with that? Thanks

Wilhelmina and Charlotte.

I'll bet T'Bonz has some kind of input. She's the geneology buff around here.

^Awesome about Charlotte. Yeah, I was thinking about T'Bonz too. Thanks

Another possibility for Lattie might be Letitia?

Never hear that one before. I'd agree with digits that Willie is (or rather, was) a common contraction of Wilhelmina.

It might also be the shorten form of Leatrice which was a name that was most popular around the time of WWI.

The thing is if it's Charlotte, it means she (the one named Lattie) named her adopted daughter after herself, left on a doorstep as a baby for real.

We haven't signed up for anything yet. But when we looked up our grandparents, all eight of them, my fiancee's paternal grandmother (not Lattie, her biological daughter) was the only one we didn't find anything on these genealogy websites.

It'd be nice if T'Bonz chipped in, yes.

I haven't traced my tree back very far, only to the mid 1800s (5 or 6 generations above me). It's all come from asking older relatives what they remember.

Some of my ancestors were very wealthy, some were quite poor. Some lived in middle of London, and some were settled in the middle of nowhere in the countryside, but all were native English. One was married to a man who's father held an hereditary title of Lord. One relative spent his life in the Navy. One worked with the mentally disturbed. Whether they called them psychiatrists in the olden days I don't know.

There was also one instance of inbreeding. Perhaps the most interesting person was a great-great-great-aunt, who was a psychic and fortune teller in her village. Every day she'd have two or three people visiting her for readings and advice. That sort of thing was popular at one time. My grandmother lived with her grandparents for some time, so knew her.

A string of my ancestors were musically gifted, and that's one thing that's been handed down in my direction. I know I have a good ear for music, and it was my favourite subject at school. My music teacher frequently said to me that I had a lot of potential and that I was "wasting a rare talent" by not taking it further. But it's not something I've ever wanted to make much of an effort with.

One worked with the mentally disturbed. Whether they called them psychiatrists in the olden days I don't know.

Lots of more directly descriptive and expressive terms existed: "mad doctor", "nerve doctor", "lunatic doctor" or "doctor of the insane".

I rather wish I could call myself one of those now. Others may already have called me one or more of those, but they didn't mean it in quite the same way...

But I would so love to have a business card with my title as "Doctor of the Insane". :D

The obvious names were given: Charlotte (although that is usually Lottie) or Leticia. Also Lettice is a possiblity. For W it would be Wilhelmina, Wilma, Wilda, Wilona, etc.

If you PM me the information you have on the family, especially those two, I'll have a look in my resources and see if I can help you.

I should PM you too. I've been stuck on a certain part of the tree, then found out it's actually an Irish extension!
